Russia's play-maker, Andrey Arshavin, says he wants to play Slovenia in the World Cup play-offs and avoid Ukraine and Bosnia.
Guus Hiddink's men lost their chance to automatically qualify on Saturday, after a 0-1 defeat by group winners Germany.
Talking to Russia’s Sport channel, Arshavin said “the feeling of dissatisfaction” remains after the loss to Germany as “we tried to show all that we were capable of, but this was not enough.”
“It’s still early to rank us among the world’s top teams, but we can play against strong opponents, and, under certain circumstances, even beat them. In the last match [against Germany] we lacked some boldness, some zing, to reverse the situation. The Germans were always famous for their discipline, but on Saturday they even outdid themselves, made the most of what they created and managed to maintain the desired result. This is what makes a world class team,” the 28-year-old explained.
They still have a game to play, but Russia will finish second regardless, and face runners-up from another group.
The draw will be made in a week's time. Russia is seeded and will miss the likes of Portugal or France. But Arshavin says Bosnia and Ukraine are the worst possible opponents for Russia.
“I would prefer Slovenia, though it is also a decent team. In any case, it’ll be tough against any opponent,” he said, regarding who he thought his team could be facing in the playoffs.
The two-legged play-offs will take place on the 14th and 18th of November.
The Arsenal star says there’s nothing wrong about reaching the World Cup through playoffs, as the main goal is to be in South Africa.
”You know, when you enter the restaurant through the back door, you sometimes get served an even better meal and receive more love and respect. But we aren’t there yet, so we’ve got two very difficult matches ahead of us,” Arshavin said.
Hiddink to put rookies through their paces in AzerbaijanRussia coach Guus Hiddink has added two new faces to his squad for Wednesday’s match in Azerbaijan. Midfielder Dmitry Tarasov and defender Oleg Kuzmin will make their international debuts. |
Russia won’t risk suspensions in AzerbaijanGuus Hiddink says he won’t risk suspensions in Russia's final World Cup Group 4 qualifier against Azerbaijan. |

This is the wrong approach. We need to be clinical, and be able to play anyone, without any other thoughts other than producing the best performance we can, which will hopefully take us through. I have seen so many good teams go down to lesser opposition with this approach. Instead we should be professional, do our homework and go out there and play exciting fast football. Our aim should be playing great football, the results will then come. Worrying about who the opposition is, is not football, it is too much psychology, which we are guilty of on too many occasions. Let's go and play our best and make it a game to talk about! Gus has done a great job, we are with him all the way, we want him to continually reach for the best football and superb tactics. This is sport and sometimes it won't go our way, but regardless we should be producing football that provides great games to watch. Then footballing fans will want to watch us from around the world. Excellence is the only way, worrying is not! Go Russia!
