Barcelona couldn’t break Chelsea’s defense at their Camp Nou home stadium in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final, which ended in a scoreless draw.
The Londoners came into the match in Catalonia with lone striker Didier Drogba and an extra man in midfield, John Mikel Obi, getting ready to make a stand against the most aggressive team in European football.
The Spanish side dominated possession for the whole 90 minutes but the whole time failed to find the back of Peter Cech’s net.
Guests Chelsea created the biggest chance of the game. Drogba dropped one-on-one with Barcelona’s goalkeeper after a careless back pass from Marquez, but Victor Valdes denied both shots from the Ivorian striker.
Chelsea managed to leave Barca’s main man Lionel Messi without the ball, but the hosts could still have grabbed the winner in the dying minutes of the game.
A header from close range by Bojan Krcic went over the crossbar, while a shot by Aleksandr Hleb was denied by Cech and his rebound went wide, ending the game 0-0
“As I said before it is very difficult to play against Barca, and to have greater possession of the ball. They know how to put pressure and also how to attain the rhythm of the game. But we defended ourselves well even though I would like to have more possession of the ball. But playing against one of the best teams in the world I think is quite a merit for us,” Guus Hiddink, Chelsea boss, said.
Barca has been unable to win a home match against an English opposition for the fifth time. Now the Champions League favorites face a serious test in London as they need to score at Stamford Bridge in order to progress.
“I think that it will be really hard for both teams, because each team has to score a goal to qualify. It will be difficult but I think is not a bad score for us and that we can qualify to the final," Josep Guardiola, Barcelona coach, said.
