Former Real Madrid boss Juande Ramos will get his first taste of UEFA Champions League action with CSKA Moscow on Tuesday.
The Spaniard has only been in charge for one match so far domestically, but he’ll be hoping his considerable European experience will come to the fore against German champs Wolfsburg.
CSKA head into the clash on the back of a comprehensive 3-0 win over Krylya Sovetov at the weekend.
Despite sitting third in the Russian league, it’s been far from a memorable season for the red and blues. CSKA have lost their last three Moscow derbies and seen their star striker Vagner Love leave on loan for Palmeiras. Regardless, Ramos remains positive.
“My team is in a very good physical condition. Of course, it is hard to tell for me, because I'm with the team for just four days. What I've seen in practice is fine and we have won our last game. The team has shown its strength. We know what we can do, and we hope to come out with a good performance against Wolfsburg,” Juande Ramos, CSKA coach, said at the pre-match press-conference.
Wolfsburg aren’t exactly in the best of health either. Having shocked the German football aristocracy by clinching their first Bundesliga crown last year, Armin Veh's side have lost three of their opening five games this season.
The match marks their debut in European football's premier competition.
Meanwhile, favorites to top Group B, Manchester United, take on Turkish champions Besiktas.
More action will take place across Europe on Tuesday, with eight games in all.
Group A brings French champions Bordeaux to Turin, while Israel's finest – Maccabi Haifa – host Bayern Munich.
In Group C, Real Madrid bring their glittering squad to Zurich. Marseille and AC Milan renew old rivalries at the Stade Velodrome.
Finally, Athletico Madrid and APOEL square off in Group D, while Chelsea's quest for a first Champions League title starts at home with Porto.
