CSKA Moscow face a must-win Champions League game at home to Wolfsburg on Wednesday, Anything other than three points means the Armymen will have to settle for a place in the Europa Cup.
The Muscovites must beat Wolfsburg to maintain their hopes of becoming the first Russian side since 2004 to make the latter stages of the Champions League.
The Armymen do not have any injury problems, but they will be missing Deividas Šemberas through suspension, and the Lithuanian international says the task facing his team is very simple.
“Wolfsburg are a very good team, but we are not thinking about them. We know only a victory will be good enough for us – and that is what we are aiming for. It does not matter who will be playing or who will not be, because we need all three points,” Deividas Šemberas said.
Meanwhile, CSKA's opponents Wolfsburg need just a point to qualify for the next round. The German club easily won the first meeting between the two clubs 3-1. However, Grafite, Wolfsburg's destroyer-in-chief, won't be playing on Wednesday night against CSKA. The Brazilian has been suspended.
Obafemi Martins will replace him in attack, and Wolfsburg's head coach expects a much tougher encounter this time round against the Armymen.
“This will be a completely different game for us, in comparison to the first match between the two clubs. We are coming towards the end of the group stages, and both teams still have plenty to play for. CSKA know they have to win, if they want to keep their Champions League hopes alive. We only need a point, but that does not mean we will sit back and defend. We are strong in attack, and we will look to try and win,” Wolfsburg coach Armin Veh said.
Even though Wolfsburg only need a draw to join Manchester United in the knockout stages, CSKA's boss Leonid Slutsky also does not believe the German champs will sit back and play for a point.
“In my view, Wolfsburg is not a typical German team. They are very good going forward, and generally count on their attacking skills. In this respect, they differ from most other German teams, which are disciplined and strict in defense. Though having such players as Misimovich, Geko, Martins and Grafite, you would surely choose playing attacking football,” Leonid Slutsky, CSKA coach, said.
CSKA will come into Wednesday's clash full of confidence, after victory over bitter rivals Spartak Moscow at the weekend. Wolfsburg, in addition, lost their last Bundesliga encounter, going down 3-2 at home to Nürnburg, and find themselves lying mid-table in their domestic league.
