In the Russian Premier League CSKA Moscow have kept their faint title hopes alive with a resounding 3-0 win over city rivals Dynamo.
CSKA 3-0 Dynamo Moscow
Following a disappointing 3-1 loss in the Champions League to Wolfsburg last week, CSKA were desperate to return to their winning ways under new boss Juande Ramos. Dynamo were also in need of all three points, as they were looking for their first win in more than a month.
It was the hosts who looked more dangerous early on, but were unable to convert their advantage into something valuable.
They finally took the lead nine minutes into the second half. Alan Dzagoev's wonderful piece of vision found Pavel Mamaev, and the Russian Under-21 international did the rest to notch up his first goal of the season.
Dzagoev was in the thick of the action, and he could have doubled his sides lead, but he went for precision instead of power, and Shunin saved comfortably.
Dynamo hadn't created anything all match, but they went very close to equalizing midway through the second half, as Kokorin didn’t make the most of his excellent opportunity.
CSKA made the game safe five minutes from time, as Krasic was on hand to score, after substitute Gilerme's header had hit the post.
And just a couple of minutes later they made it 3-0. Dzagoev, who had a fine game, unselfishly slipped the ball to Gilerme, who was left with the simplest of finishes.
It was a thoroughly deserved win for CSKA, and Igor Akinfeev says his side still has title aspirations.
“We managed to pick up our play in the second half, and were able to get the victory we needed,” Akinfeev said, before adding:
“Every match for us is important at the moment, as we want to move up the table.”
It is going to be a tall order for CSKA to catch Rubin, but Juande Ramos has brought new life to the Armymen. The form they are in at the moment, they'll certainly be difficult to beat.
The win moved the Army men to within a point of Spartak in second, but they still trail the leaders Rubin by eight points, with just eight games to play.
Tom 0-0 Rubin
The Kazan side saw their six-game winning streak ending in Tomsk this weekend as the sides played out a bore draw in Siberia.
Rubin lost their key striker Aleksandr Bukharov for the rest of the game when he limped off just before half time following a couple of rough challenges.
The hosts looked the better side throughout, but struggled to convert. As chances went begging, it finished goalless.
The draw helps Rubin stretch their lead in the league to a comfortable seven points with eight games left.
Tom, in addition, have edged away from the relegation zone. They are now five points clear.
Amkar 1-0 Terek
In the meantime Amkar have improved their position in the table thanks to a 1-0 home win over Terek.
The only goal of the game came at the very end of the first half, when Martin Kushev made the most of some confusion in the box to fire home the winner.
Krylya Sovetov 0-1 Zenit
In the late game of the day, Zenit were 1-0 winners at Krylya Sovetov in Samara.
Vladimir Bystrov scored for the St. Petersburg side following a cross from the right flank 13 minutes into the game.
It was enough to secure a win, which keeps Zenit fifth in the overall standings.
Spartak out of title race?In the Russian Premier League, Spartak Moscow have failed to close the gap on leaders Rubin after a 2-1 defeat away to Saturn. The Muscovites are now six points down to Rubin with the latter having a game in hand. |
