Espanyol captain Daniel Jarque has died of apparent heart failure in his team's hotel on the eve of a friendly against Bologna in Italy, AP reports.
“Misfortune has befallen Espanyol and the family of Dani Jarque,” the Spanish club's official website reported late Saturday.
Jarque, 26, was found unconscious on Saturday evening in his hotel room and was taken to a hospital. Medical personnel attempted to resuscitate him with a defibrillator and medication, but he did not respond to the treatment.
“It was not possible to save his life,” the Series A club announced in a statement.
The Spanish defender spent his entire professional career at Espanyol where he helped his team to capture the Spanish Cup, Copa del Rey, in 2006.
Espanyol were preparing for the new season in Coverciano, a suburb of Florence, and were scheduled to play a friendly match against Bologna on Sunday.
