Greeks fall short of upsetting Poles in Euro 2012 opener

June 08, 2012 18:11

Two goals, two red cards, one missed penalty, a 56,000-strong capacity crowd at the Warsaw National Stadium – that’s what the Euro 2012 opening match between hosts Poland and Greece was all about, setting tone for the entire tournament.

Lol, Mike.I'm not gonna disagree with you that the Czech team had a poor defence, otherwise they wouldn't have conceded  four goals!I'm just amused that at first you were like, Czechs gonna kick our ar$es, and then you were like, Czechs are horrible and have a  childish defence. I'm guessing you're not gonna see the irony there.
I watched POL vs GRE, and I can only say that Poland played very well in the first half, and Greece clawed their way back into the game in the second half. Heck, Greece could even have stolen a win, if not for that penalty save.

LOL 90% of the commenters on RT don't even watch sports, they just come on the sports article to bash Poland. They obviously didn't watch the game, because Poland played much better than Greece in the first half. Also, if the Greeks  beat Poland, it wouldn't be an upset, since Greece were the favorites. Stupid RT, always skewing the story.

No politics, please, this is sport. If, before this Euro Cup,  the Polish team had friendly matches with the likes of Argentina, Brazil or Uruguay, Turkey or Mexico they would have learnt a lot about their limits. And instead what they chose to do? Having a friendly match with ANDORRA, which ranks 199 in FIFA (above the British Virgin Islands and below Macau), and it goes without saying that Poland won comfortably 4-0.

should I start with LOL@ayaa?
Where do I start with the childish defending of the Czech's?
If they had setup their camp in my backyard their leftback would not have been awol, defenders would have closed down and a defensive mid would have protected the back four.
I will be delighted if my team wins 4-1 in the first game but if you know your football you will know even the Poles and Greeks will defend far better.

@Mike

Yes, I'm sure your grandma is a fine defender. The Czech team really should have set up their training camp in your back yard. Lol.

However, I don;t share your pessimism.. Even the underdogs have clinched the trophy before (Denmark 92, Greece 04). Russia certainly aren't underdogs (although they aren't tournament favorites either), so who knows, Russia could just go on to become this years surprise package. They certainly came close in 08, and this time we've got a great start.

ha ha ha indeed.
my 70 year old granny would have defended better than the Czechs tonight. Schoolboy defending at best so under the circumstances it should have been 8-0.
Reasonably entertaining game if you can see past the issues listed above. you will probably win the group but the only way you'll win the Euro's is on your X-Box :-)

Actually Greeks were simulating virtually all the  time. You touch them, they fall to the ground.

Hahaha loser Mike

Not need to wait 90 minutes, loser boy, 45 minutes and its 2-0, could have been 4-0. Poland needed the referee to draw with minnows like Greece at their home ground. It doesn't get any more pathetic than that.

lance did you watch the first half where Poland should have gone 3-0 up and buried the game? Calling them pathetic is a bit rich given this was their 1st competetive match in 2 years.
See you in 90 mins when we see the Czech's beat your one man team who was sold by the ar$e because he was rubbish. will laugh to hear your excuses :)

The Poles are a pathetic team. They made Greece look like Barcelona. Greeks very unlucky not to win, they were much better, missed a penalty and had a goal dissalowed that should have counted. Seems everything is against them these days. Russia is a level above anyone else in this group, and will cruise easily to the next round.
