Berti Vogts, who led Germany to Euro 1996 triumph, is reported to have been offered a job as the head coach of Russia’s Premier league side Zenit St Petersburg.

“They want Berti to step in for Dick Advocaat. The Dutchman received very good money in St Petersburg, and Berti is planning to do the same,” Norbert Pflippen, Vogts’ representative, told the German paper.

According to Pflippen, Zenit is eager to sign a two-year contract with the German specialist and his salary will be around €1 million a year.

“The attention flatters me, but I have a contract with Azerbaijan till the end of the World Cup 2010 qualifying campaign,” Berti Vogts said.

The 62-year-old started coaching in 1990, but has little experience in club football. He was the boss of the German Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen in 2000-2001.

Vogts spent the rest of his career being in charge of the national teams of Germany, Kuwait, Scotland, Nigeria and Azerbaijan.

Zenit has not commented on the issue so far. The St Petersburg side are in need of a new coach after they parted ways with Dick Advocaat last week.

The Dutchman’s rule resulted in the brightest epoch in the history of the club, having won the Russian Premier League 2007 and UEFA Cup 2007-08 under him.

Other European specialists linked with St Petersburg job are Italians – Claudio Ranieri and Roberto Mancini.
