Russia, who defeated Azerbaijan 2-0 on home soil, have held a training session in Moscow before departing to Liechtenstein for their next World Cup 2010 qualifier on April 1.

Before commencing with their training session, members of the national team were awarded honorary Master of Sport degrees, the highest and most respectable title for an athlete in Russia.

Guus Hiddink, who should be getting used to a multitude of ranks, also got named as Russia's coach of the year.

But the reporters gladly switched their attention to the pitch, as the players started their warm-up.

Russia's latest match against Azerbaijan raised a couple of questions. First one, of course, being what will be done about the amount of chances wasted.

“I would’ve liked to have two more goals for instance, but we had some good attacks, but we didn’t finish them off, but we didn’t have any problems in defense. Considering our next opponent a few changes in the squad are possible,” Guus Hiddink said.

Russia's next opponent, Liechtenstein, are similar to Azerbaijan and they really do share a few common traits. They each have a point in the current campaign, but Azerbaijan were by far more successful in their defensive strategy.

Both sides’ chances of qualifying for the final 32 are practically 0, so each game for these countries is an opportunity to put up a fight.

These teams can organize on defense

”Liechtenstein is not the biggest team in the world, but they can organize themselves at the back very well. It’s always a matter weather we’ll be able to score as soon as possible to break the defensive style of the opponent,” Guus Hiddink said.

Keeper scores twice in training match

The session culminated in a training match, in which keeper Igor Akinfeev became the main hero. But it was not about making great saves, as the CSKA man didn’t put his gloves on during the day.

He appeared in the attack and scored twice to give his team a 3-2 win, with his second coming from a penalty.

”That was the coach’s plan. It was a light training session of all of those, who played against Azerbaijan, and those who didn’t appear on the pitch on Saturday took part in a training match. So I decided to kick the ball about for a while with the boys,” Igor Akinfeev explained to Sportbox.ru.

Russia sit second in their group with four points, behind Germany, but with a game in hand.

The Germans are playing Wales on April 4, who still possess some chances to go to South Africa in 2010.
