With six games to go before the end of the season, it's as close as can be at the top of the Russian Premier League.
Lokomotiv 2-1 Rubin
Nigerian-Russian Peter Odemwingie stole the show in Cherkizovo, opening the scoring just two minutes into the match. Rubin's keeper Sergey Ryzhikov, already dazed from the rapid start to the game, was again staggered in the first half when the ball ricocheted into the back of his net thanks to Odemwingie being in the way of Ryzhikov’s attempt to clear the ball.
This proved a costly blunder, but visitors Rubin managed to save face thanks to Lasha Salukvadze, who nodded in a free kick courtesy of Alejandro Dominguez.
Salukvadze’s effort was the last goal of the game, and Rubin have extended their winless streak to three games, while Loko close the gap on Rubin to six points.
Amkar 1-2 Spartak Moscow
Spartak Moscow got a win to move them to within just one point of leaders Rubin, who suffered a shocking defeat.
The Muscovites traveled to Perm to take on Amkar, who hadn't lost a game since the return of head coach Rashid Rakhimov, only to find themselves a goal down 25 minutes in.
Martin Kushev capitalized on a Spartak blip as he lobbed the ball into the net.
However, Spartak made the best of Amkar's blunders after the interval. First, Welliton leveled matters to reclaim the top-scorer honours in the league, and then defender Malik Fathi completed the counterattack with less than 20 minutes from time to keep Spartak in hot pursuit of Rubin.
CSKA 4-0 Kuban
Also closing in on Rubin are CSKA Moscow. They crushed the recently emerged from relegation Kuban at Luzhniki arena in Moscow.
New signing Mark Gonzalez sparked off an all-out onslaught with about 25 minutes to go.
Ten minutes later, Milos Krasic doubled the lead slotting home a cross by another newbie at CSKA, Seku Olise from Nigeria.
The Serb turned provider minutes later, setting up Gonzalez at the far post for him to then head home his second of the night.
And as if it wasn't enough already, Olise added to Kuban's misery, scoring his first goal in Russia on his debut for the Armymen.
They slashed the gap on Rubin to five points, while Kuban still remain in the relegation zone.
Zenit 2-1 Dynamo Moscow
In the late game on Sunday, Zenit beat Dynamo Moscow in St. Petersburg to stay in third.
It was a bad start for Zenit as an own goal by Aleksandr Anyukov put Dynamo in front at the stroke of halftime.
The home side made up for the gaffe. Fatih Tekke put them level 15 minutes after the break, while Mateja Kezhman scored the winner just three minutes later.
Tom 3-1 Saturn
The visitors were first on the board just three minutes in with Vladimir Kuzmichev sending it home on a corner kick.
The home side, however, struck back some five minutes later with Artem Dzyuba nailing it from the spot after Saturn got called for a handball.
Dzyuba struck again in the second half. A terrible lapse by the visitors' defense allowed the 21-year-old to grab his fourth goal of the season.
Former Saturn star Aleksandr Kharitonov headed home his fourth goal of the year three minutes later but, alas, it was all in vain. The home side grabbed a much needed 3-1 win.
Rostov 2-2 FC Moscow
FC Moscow, meanwhile, drew away to Rostov with four goals between the two teams.
Dmitry Akimov opened scoring for the home side right before the break.
Igor Lebedenko promptly followed suit early in the second showing great resilience in a fierce battle in the area.
The tail end of the half was dominated by the Muscovites with goals by Aleksey Rebko and Martin Yakubko salvaging a 2-2 draw.
Khimki 1-2 Terek
Midtable Terek easily disposed of a struggling Khimki.
Shamil Lakhiyalov opened the score from the penalty spot eleven minutes into the game.
The next 71 minutes of action proved goalless, until Timur Dzhabrailov broke the deadlock 82 minutes in with an impressive header.
Khimki grabbed an amazing consolation goal three minutes later, but it was a case of too little too late.
Krylya Sovetov 0-0 Spartak Nalchik
It was a goalless affair over in Samara, with both Krylya Sovetov and Spartak Nalchik unable to take advantage of their chances.
The visitors desperately need points, as they find themselves third from bottom, while Krylya Sovetov are tenth in the rankings.
