Guus Hiddink says he won’t risk suspensions in Russia's final World Cup Group 4 qualifier against Azerbaijan.
Following Saturday’s defeat to Germany, Russia cannot qualify for South Africa automatically and will compete in a playoff in November.
“There’s nothing at stake as I said before. I will consider the players, who are in danger of suspension due to a yellow card. I’ll take it into consideration, of course,” Guus Hiddink assured.
Roman Pavlyuchenko, Yury Zhirkov, Aleksandr Anukov, Vasily Berezutsky, Konstantin Zyrianov and Igor Semshov are all in the danger list and are unlikely to appear on the pitch in Baku.
“Of course we are not feeling that great because of the loss to Germany. But we knew we had a route through the playoffs if things didn’t go as planned. We’ll be playing for pride against Azerbaijan. But I am sure there’ll be some changes given that some players are sitting on yellow cards which we have to take into account as we have important playoff matches in November,” Igor Semshov said.
Hiddink invited two new players into the team: Dmitry Tarasov of FC Moscow and Oleg Kuzmin of Lokomotiv. They both have a good chance to make their debut for their country on Wednesday.
Unlike Russia, some other teams have a lot to play for on the final match day of the group stage.
The draw for the playoffs will be on Monday and also hoping to be in that are Portugal, who have to beat Malta to secure the runners-up spot in Group 1. They have to do it despite being without injured star Cristiano Ronaldo.
Malta have only collected one point from their qualifying campaign, Although Portugal boss Carlos Queiroz says he wont be allowing his players to relax, knowing if they slip up, Sweden – who face Albania – could pinch second spot.
In Group 3, Slovakia are guaranteed a playoff spot, but they're aiming to top their group with a victory away to Poland – to secure a ticket to South Africa.
However, should Slovakia lose, Slovenia could claim automatic qualification if they defeat San Marino.
They are in with a chance, as San Marino haven’t won a single game in their group and conceded 44 goals, scoring just once.
In Group 2, Switzerland need a point against Israel to qualify. If they lose, Greece will take top spot if they beat Luxembourg.
England may have been the runaway leaders in Group 6, but Ukraine can still seal a playoff spot by beating Andorra. If they slip up, Croatia could pip them to second place with a win in Kazakhstan.
To round things off there is a huge game in South America. Uruguay and Argentina are fighting over the last automatic qualification spot in Montevideo.
A draw would be good enough for Diego Maradona's men, but if Argentina lose and Ecuador beat Chile, Argentina will be eliminated and not make it to next summer’s World Cup.
