CSKA Moscow 2-0 Aston Villa Birmingham
Villa’s coach Martin O’Neil decided not to bring most of his leaders for an away game with CSKA. The Birmingham team is competing unexpectedly well in the English Premier league, sitting 4th in the table, which gives them a chance to play in the Champions League next season.
But the club bench is not long enough to succeed in all the tournaments so Aston Villa will concentrate on the home league and decided to sacrifice the UEFA.
And CSKA did well in helping the Englishmen in achieving their goal. The first half the match at Luzhninki stadium was pretty calm as Army Men’s coach, Zico, told his men to concentrate on defense after a 1-1 score in the first game.
CSKA got their first shot on goal only after the 40th minute but was always in control of the game.
After the break, Villa, which needed to score in order to progress, put powerful forward Marlon Harewood onto the field and began his assault on CSKA’s box, which gave the speedy Army Men midfielders a lot of space in counter attacks. Milos Krasic and Yury Zhirkov both went face to face with keeper Bradley Guzan but couldn’t score.
CSKA’s creative approach to a free kick at the 61st minute gave them the lead. Zhirkov’s shot after a pass from Alan Dzagoev was unstoppable.
After the score was 1-0 Aston Villa never looked like coming back into the match, leaving Moscow team’s keeper Igor Akinfeev with little to do. And CSKA added another goal in stoppage time. UEFA Cup’s best striker, Wagner Love, put his name on the scoreboard, scoring his 10th goal in the competition.
CSKA beat Aston Villa 3-1 on aggregate and progresses into the next round of the tournament where they face Shakhtar Donetsk. The Ukrainians knocked another English club Tottenham Hotspur out of the UEFA Cup, 3-1 on aggregate.
Stuttgart 1-2 Zenit Saint Petersburg
After a 2-1 win at home a draw was good enough for Zenit to qualify for the next round. But it was the UEFA Cup holders who opened the scoring as Russian international Igor Semshov took full advantage of Danni’s cross, 1-0.
Despite the absence of disqualified captain Anatoly Timoschuk, the Saint Petersburg team dominated the ball possession and looked firm in defense for most of the game.
But Stuttgart managed to equalize after a great individual effort from substitute Timo Gebhart. He seized the ball on a clearance from the Zenit players, advanced past three defenders and beating keeper Vyacheslav Malafeev.
The Germans needed another goal to level the score on aggregate and had ten minutes to do so, but a goal from Zenit’s midfielder Viktor Fayzulin, who got another great pass from Danni, ruined their hopes.
Zenit won both matches against Stuttgart with the same score – 2-1 (4-2 on aggregate).
AC Milan 2-2 Werder Bremen
AC Milan suffered a shocking blow at the hands of the German Werder Bremen. The Italian giants looked to be in full control of the encounters, scoring two goals in the first half and making the aggregate score 3-1.
But the hosts stopped playing too early and Bremen launched an impressive comeback. Former Bayern Munich star, Claudio Pizarro, scored twice to make it 3-3 on aggregate and let his team pass to the last 16 on away goals.
