European football’s governing body, UEFA, has confirmed it’s looking into 40 cases of suspected match fixing in the Champions League and UEFA Cup.
The investigation involves games from early qualifying rounds.
The games are from the last four years and mainly involve Eastern European teams.
The head of UEFA's disciplinary services, Peter Limacher, said clubs involved knew they were going out of the competition and so were trying to make a profit.
“In the cases we have seen, it's really the deliberate planned fix of the games, the whole games. It might take some time (to prove) but in cases where we can work together with the police that might be possible,” explained Limacher.
One of the sides concerned is Macedonian outfit FK Milano, who lost 12-2 on aggregate to Croatian side Slaven Koprivnica.
