World Cup officials and football fans across the globe look to be able to breathe a sigh of relief finally. That’s after construction union heads for FIFA World Cup 2010 called off a strike on Wednesday.

Unions and employers say they concluded negotiations in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Details of the new wage agreement have not been revealed, but it is rumored that employers and workers have settled on a 12 percent pay rise, while workers were initially demanding a 13 percent rise.

Construction work is set to resume on Thursday morning.

The strike began last Wednesday and threatened to derail already tight schedules for construction projects across South Africa, which is preparing to host the 2010 world championship.
