The Russian youth team have lost their final round robin game to Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships in the central Russian city of Ufa. The result leaves them second in their group thinking of the quarter final against Switzerland.

The game was decided late in the first period, when Canada got the most out of a 5 minute power-play, as the Russians conceded twice following Valery Nichushkin’s rough foul.

Mikhail Varnakov’s charges responded with a goal of their own soon after, but two goals in each of the remaining periods put the result beyond doubt – 4-1.

Russia will face Switzerland next in the quarter-finals on January 2, while Canada will play either Team USA or the Czech Republic.

Reigning champions Sweden have won the other round robin group to guarantee their place in the semi-final.

I'm happy Canada won, but it's not over.Sweden and Russia produce terrific players, they should, we have similar climates in our countries. For that reason I feel closer to Russian people than Americans. We are neighbors, we just can't drive to Russia and that's a shame. But Russia has many times our population, they should turn out more great players just by the difference in population. Some of my favorite professional players are Russian born, like Datsyuk, Larionov, Fedorov, Kovalev, to name a few.The greatest hockey played is Canada vrs Russia no matter who wins, its just the best hockey. We used to have a edge just by the amount of "heart" we brought to the game, but they are even closing the gap in that department.Russia is not done yet, not till the last second, don't sell them short, they are not quiters. They did it to us before.
