Canada is likely to be Russia’s main opponent at the 2013 World Junior Hockey Championships starting Wednesday and Russia’s captain Nail Yakupov says he knows how to beat them.

With last year's shock winners Sweden depleted by injuries to several key players, hosts Russia and Canada are regarded the main contenders for gold.

Both squads are strengthened by the two biggest stars of their age as Russia is led by NHL No. 1 draft pick Nail Yakupov and Canada by center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who has an NHL season under his belt, notching up 52 points in 62 games.

“Of course, I’m ready for the leading role morally, physically and by all other criteria,” the R-Sport agency quotes Yakupov as saying. “I feel great and I’m ready to play my heart out."

Yakupov and Nugent-Hopkins will reunite at the Edmonton Oilers once the NHL lockout is resolved, but now they are the biggest rivals; each dreaming of winning the event.

“As I grew up, I always dreamt of playing at the junior world championships," Nugent-Hopkins told R-Sport. "Now I have a unique opportunity to play here.”

The Canadians are known for their rough physical style of play, but Yakupov says his team is ready for that.

"I understand that I will have to keep a cool head and ignore provocation, especially against the Canadians. These guys play dirty. We got used to that, we played a few games in North America, so our team is ready," he says.

This year the two teams go into Group B along with Germany, Slovakia and the United States. Russia and Canada clash on New Year's Eve knowing the group winner will directly go to the semi-finals.

The other group includes Sweden, Finland and the Czech Republic, Switzerland and Latvia.

The final is scheduled for January 5 and will be played at the 8,000-capacity Ufa Arena, the home venue of the KHL team Salavat Yulaev.

Stupid canadians, its beyond hilarious how seriously you grasp upon the only thing in the world that makes you half legitimized... the sport of hockey, and yet you can't even master that... you're a joke. You talk like an expert on what little you know. But being jealous will get you nowhere..there are only two types of people in this world...Canadians and everyone who wants to be one...ha ha ha...LMFAO..dufus.

We don't play dirty, we play tough. Thats the way the game is played...let the puck do the talking.
You PLAY dirty! What Camara and Lipon have done again Slovakia is a shame for the game of hockey! You always become frustrated when someone leads against you (like Slovakia did)! I live in Canada so I know what I'm talking about! Monday I will support Russia because of Canadian style! Go RUSSIA! I guess most of you guys missed the knee on knee that put one of the Canadian boys down on the ice from a Slovakian...knee on knee is a serious hit, and no penalty. Yet, in the US Canada game, they sent a US guy out for a head shot, that really was not a head shot. The same with Camara, it wasn't a purposely done head shot.  It seems some of you miss the skate to ankle trick the Russians do or the spearing behind the plays...I guess you miss that one too. Its hockey you sucks, if you ever played the game you would understand its high energy sometimes you get your head handed to you. So pick up your head and try to miss a few checks, your not very good at that. I have never heard a Canadian or American hockey player ever say some of the other teams were dirty players. And they are. This isn't ballet folks. If this young Russian kid wants to play in the NHL, he better find himself a new head, this won't be forgotten....what a fool. Hes going to be a turkey shoot in the bigs because hes a crybaby.

That is nonsense, and as a Canadian I feel ashamed of that kind of moronic response.  Next you'll be saying that Borje Salming and Daniel Alfredsson were "chicken Swedes".  This isn't the 1970s anymore.  I don't think that Canada's national juniors are dirtier than any other team at the junior championships, although perhaps a little more blatant in their misdeeds.  Hits to the head like Lipon's are unacceptable, though.  Plus, in a way, Yakupov has a point: if you think how many times OHL (Ontario hockey league) players targeted his head or his knees, I would be left with the same impression.  But let's be clear, this has nothing to do with national prejudice -- for instance, Sydney Crosby was abused far, far worse in the QC league that Yakupov ever was.  It is not a pretty side of Canadian junior hockey.  However, the players on our junior national team are not the guys who did any of the dirty work -- they merely, like Yakupov, have been on the receiving end their whole careers.
