The Brawn GP has gotten off to a fairytale start in the new Formula 1 season as Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello finished first and second respectively at the Australian Grand Prix.
Button and Barrichello started from the front row in Melbourne and finished the race in the same order.
The Brit never gave his opponents a chance, leading from the first to 58th lap, but his Brazilian teammate had to fight hard for his second spot.
Barrichello bogged down to the middle of the pack as his car activated its anti-stall device in the beginning of the race.
The destiny of the Grand Prix was decided on lap 55. While chasing Jensen Button, Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel and BMW's Robert Kubica collided. The crash allowed Barichello to reclaim second place. After that, nobody could challenge the Brawn pilot because the race finished under the guidance of a safety car.
"A fairy tale ending really to the first race of our career together, and I hope we can continue this way. We are going to fight every way we can to keep this car competitive and at the front. This has got to continue and this is where we want to be. Bring on Malaysia!” Jensen Button said at the press-conference.
Brawn GP motor racing became the first team since 1977 to win its debut appearance.
The team was formed on 6 March 2009 when Ross Brawn, the ex-team boss of the Honda Racing F1 Team, bought it from Honda as the Japanese car producers decided to withdraw from sports.
Defending champ Lewis Hamilton also had an impressive race. He called it one of the best in his career. The McLaren pilot started from the last position on the grid due to technical problems in qualification, but after having his gearbox replaced, he managed to finish 4th.
Hamilton eventually crossed the line in fourth but was awarded third after he was illegally overtaken by Jarno Trulli.
The other four pilots who earned points at the Australian grand prix were Trulli, Timo Glock, Fernando Alonso Renault, Nico Rosberg, Sebastien Buemi and Sebastien Bourdais.
