Vladimir Chagin has lost the lead in the Silk Way Rally truck standings due to technical problems in the fifth stage of the event.
Chagin’s KAMAZ has lost a wheel some seven kilometers before the finish of his way from Bayneu to Janozen in Kazakhstan. The vehicle demands repairs and it isn’t clear whether the Russian driver will be able to continue the race.
Another Russian, though, was there to replace him at the top. Firdaus Kabirov, also a KAMAZ man, produced a faultless stage and finished more than 20 minutes ahead of Gerard de Rooy from the Netherlands, who occupies second spot in the table.
Nasser Al Attiyah has kept his lead in the overall car standings, despite finishing second behind Dakar 2009 winner Giniel de Villiers of South Africa.
The Qatari pilot enjoys some 6 minute lead from the two-time World Rally champion Carlos Sainz.
The Silk Way spans three countries – Russia, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. It started in Kazan on the weekend, and is due to finish on September 13 in the Turkmen capital, Ashgabat.
