Rugby the next big thing in Russia?

Russia only finished third at the home leg of the European Sevens, so RT spoke to the president of the Russian Rugby Federation, Vyacheslav Kopev, to get his views on how the sport is developing in the country.
Rugby is a game that could go hand in hand with the unique Russian spirit as I understand it. Firstly it is the ultimate team game, that requires all its team members to work as a unit weather in defence or attack,Secondly it is a game of skilful force where you attack with power but are mindful of yor opponents strengths and how best to surprise them,Thirdly it is a game which appeals to stronger built men who find the perfect outlet to demonstrate their physical strength, but most importantly it helps young men bond together into a common cause that is noble as it involves fair play. How can this game not find a home in the Russian spirit,I expect Russia to become quickly an adept Rugby force, lets hope they make it to the next world cup as this will galvinise the game at home...I think once they start to beat Georgia they will they find all the confidence they need, Go Russia the world of rugby is much richer for your part in it!

I can understand the problems you face, especially the snow! In general terms my advice would be to find out about the basics of the game, get a rugby ball and get out on a field - even if you are by yourself! Basic skills are vital and developing them can be very enjoyable. Kick and throw the ball about and others are likely to be surprised and interested and want to have a go. As there is a place for all shapes and sizes you should have new teams in no time! All the best with your rugby endeavors Peter Dawson.
