Kim Clijsters has capped off a comeback to tennis by winning her second US Open title, after two years absence, during which she had a baby.
Clijsters looked to continue her flourishing run at Flushing Meadows, after beating both Williams sisters in the previous rounds.
World No. 6 Caroline Wozniacki also wanted to make a personal career mark, appearing in her maiden Grand Slam final.
Clijsters found herself behind in the opener but the Belgian came back from 4-2 down to take the first set 7-5 in emphatic fashion, her 18-month-old daughter Jada cheering on.
The 2005 winner Clijsters was able to use that leverage to close out the second set against the less experienced Wozniacki.
7-5, 6-3 is how the Belgian did it, grabbing her second US Open title and becoming the first mother to win a major since Evonne Cawley at Wimbledon in 1980, and the first unseeded woman ever to win at Flushing Meadows.
“But maybe now I've become a lot more understanding of myself, how to deal when different emotions come up. Maybe that's something when you're young and you get nervous. As an example, beating Venus a few rounds ago. Maybe in the past I would have been influenced a little bit about good results and then had the lack of that focus a little bit in the next round," Kim Clijsters told the tournament’s official website.
"So even the situation with Serena, those are things when you're 18, 19, [that] can have a big impact on you. Now I have the experience of knowing how to deal with it and knowing myself a little bit better. I think that's the biggest difference, is that I know myself a lot better than I did a few years ago,” she added.
In the men's Roger Federer is looking for his sixth title, against Juan Martin Del Potro on Monday after beating Serb Novak Jokovic in their semi-final clash.
