Dinara Safina will overtake Serena Williams for the number one spot in the WTA rankings for the first time in her career later this month.
The 22-year-old is the second Russian to assume the top spot in the women’s rankings after Maria Sharapova.
Safina is also part of the first ever brother-sister world number one pairing as her brother Marat was previously ranked first on the ATP Tour.
"It's a great honor to reach the No. 1 ranking, and it is a dream every girl who has ever wanted to play professional tennis shares," says Dinara. "It is even extra special for me since my brother Marat was able to reach the No. 1 ranking, and I am happy to share this achievement with him."
The Muscovite has won four Tour titles over the last 12 months, while also finishing runner-up five times.
