Roger Federer has triumphed in the Wimbledon singles competition in an epic five set final against Andy Roddick to win his 15th career Grand Slam title.

The Swiss and the American had already met in two Wimbledon tournaments, with Federer winning both times. And despite a heroic effort, Roddick couldn’t break the tradition this year.

Roddick had just one break point chance in the opener, but it was enough for him to take the set 7-5.

Federer was faultless on his serve in the second. And it eventually went to a tie-break, where the American looked strong, going up 5-2. But his rival fought back to win 8-6.

The third set also ended 6-6, and again it was the Swiss player who acted with confidence in the decisive moments to take the tie-break 7-5.

But Roddick’s confidence was not shaken after two dropped sets. The American outplayed Federer in the fourth set, 6-3.

According to the rules of tennis, there’s no tie-break in the 5th set, so the decider turned into an ultimate test of strength and nerves for the players. Both Federer and Roddick were outstanding on their serves, not giving away any break-point chances for 95 minutes. But at 15-14, Federer had his first match point and delivered the vital shot.

The final score of 5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, and 16-14 allowed Roger Federer to put his hands on Wimbledon’s silver-plated cup for the 7th time.

Russia also has something to celebrate

The boy’s final was also played on the day, and it was a Russian who took the glory.

Andrey Kuznetsov came from behind to beat of the Jordan Cox of U.S., 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
