An honor well-deserved. World’s top female tennis player, Maria Sharapova, is going to be Team Russia’s flag-bearer at the opening of the London Olympics.
“We’ve reached an agreement with Sharapova on the issue after Saturday’s final at Roland Garros,” Shalil Tarpischev, Russia’s Fed Cup coach, told Sport-Express newspaper.
Maria defeated Sara Errani of Italy in the French Open final, becoming the first Russian to bag all four Grand Slam titles.
The Roland Garros triumph allowed the 25-year-old to regain the World No.1 spot, which she previously owned back in 2005 as a teenager.
Sharapova has confessed that competing at the Olympics has always been her dream, as she plans to fully concentrate on preparations for London 2012 after Wimbledon.
Basketball star, Andrey Kirilenko carried the country’s tricolor at the previous Summer Games' opening ceremony in Beijing 2008.
