The new darling of women’s tennis has lived up to her mantle once again at the US Open. 17-year-old Melanie Oudin knocked out a fourth Russian rival in succession on Monday.

Nadya Petrova became the one packing her bags, while the US youngster marches on to the quarter-finals.

It was Petrova, however, who eased through the first set on a 6-1 scoreline. But Oudin, buoyed by the raucous New York crowd, fought back in the second to secure it on a tie-break.

The final set was more straightforward. 6-3 to the teenager, and a Final 8 spot for a player who only turned pro only last year.

“Now I know that I do belong here. I can compete with these girls no matter who I'm playing. I have a chance against anyone," Melanie Oudin told the tournament's official website.

But Oudin won’t have the chance to try and make it five beaten Russians in a row, after Svetlana Kuznetsova failed to defend a first set lead against Caroline Wozniacki.

The Dane stormed back to take a 2-6, 7-6, 7-6 win. Disappointment for the 2004 winner at Flushing Meadows, Kuznetsova, who was seeking her second slam of the season after winning in Paris.

Injury stops Davydenko

Nikolay Davydenko's wait for a first Grand Slam title must continue, after exiting Flushing Meadows with a thigh injury.

It means that, yet again, a Russian man will fail to make the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam.

Davydenko retired midway through his 4th round tie against Robin Soderling. The 8th seed pulled out after being two sets to one down.

But there were no such worries for World No. 1 Roger Federer. The Swiss was his old brilliant self, thrashing Tommy Robredo off the court 7-5 6-2 6-2.

Federer is aiming for a record-equaling 6th US Open crown in a row and on this form it would take a brave person to bet against him achieving the incredible feat.
