Russian tennis star Dinara Safina has triumphed over Caroline Wozniacki to lay her hands on the Madrid Open trophy on Sunday.

The World No. 1 wasted no time demolishing her young Danish rival, steaming through the first set in less than 50 minutes, 6-2.

Wozniacki, who took the better of Amelie Mauresmo in the semis, tried to put up a fight in the second set, but could only save four games. The deciding set ended 6-4.

Safina continues to impress on clay this season. The Madrid Open became her second title after laying claim to the No. 1 ranking.

The 23-year-old claimed the Italian Open trophy last week after beating fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova in straight sets also on clay.

“I proved that I am No.1 and the best player in Madrid this week. I dreamed of being No.1 for so long and now that I am I just play better and better,” Dinara Safina said to the tournament's official website, after her win at the weekend.

Home crowd unable to help Nadal against Federer

Roger Federer finally overcame his nemesis Rafael Nadal, who Safina called her “idol”, in straight sets on Sunday May 18.

The World No. 2 took the first set 6-4. The Swiss, who, unbelievably, was still searching for his first title of the year, was matching the Spaniard stroke-for-stroke at the baseline.

The second set ended with the same score line. After earning a break, Federer served out for the match, sealing it with an ace, to inflict Nadal's fifth loss out of 155 matches on clay.

"It's definitely good for my confidence, especially beating Rafa in the finals, I'm working hard and doing the right things, and it gives me a lot of confidence going into the French Open, which maybe wouldn't have been the case a couple of weeks ago," Roger Federer said to the tournament's official website.
