Dinara Safina has reclaimed the top spot in the WTA rankings from Serena Williams just a day before the season-ending championship kicks off in Doha.

The American, however, can regain the number one position by winning the grand finale.

The two players are competing in different groups of the robin round.

Serena will play sister Venus, Elena Dementieva and Svetlana Kuznetsova in the Maroon Group.

At the same time, Dinara has been drawn with Caroline Wozniacki, Jelena Jankovic and Victoria Azarenka in the White quartet.

In the men’s ranking there has been no change in the top ten. Despite his disappointing loss in the first round of the Kremlin Cup, Russia’s best tennis player, Nikolay Davydenko, remained in sixth, while Mikhail Youzhny, who claimed the title in Moscow, has advanced five positions to find himself in 25th.
