World number one Maria Sharapova has suffered a shock defeat at Wimbledon losing in straight sets to Germany's Sabine Lisicki.
Sharapova had beaten the number 15 seed in their last three meetings but couldn't get going today. The Russian gave away the first set when it seemed she would make a comeback from three games down.
Lisicki, wearing a long-sleeved shirt for warmth, totally controlled the second set and ended the match with an ace to win 6-4, 6-3.
Consequently, Sharapova has missed out on a fifth quarter-final appearance at Wimbledon. However, fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko has made the last eight for the first time after beating Shuai Peng from China.
Defending champion Petra Kvitova is also through after coming from a set down to beat Italy's Francesca Schiavone, as is four-time champion Serena Williams, who overcame Yaroslava Shvedova, again in three sets.
In the men’s draw Russian Mikhail Youzhny has beaten Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin in five sets, and in the quarters will play Roger Federer who got past Xavier Malisse.
