Tennis player Maria Sharapova is the only Russian on the annual Forbes 100 list of the world’s most powerful celebrities, published Monday, June 28.
According to Forbes, injuries this year have greatly interfered with Sharapova's game and, consequently, wealth. Thus Sharapova, 23, within one year has moved down from 76th place among the most powerful celebrities to 81st position. However, she is still among the richest female athletes, earning around $22 million annually.
Sharapova appears in commercials for such brands as Canon, Prince, Tiffany, Tag Heuer and Land Rover. Her biggest contract was signed with sports products company Nike, which re-signed the athlete in January to an eight-year contract worth up to $70 million. She also receives money from sales of her own tennis line and a line of bags and shoes through Nike subsidiary Cole Haan.
The three-time Grand Slam singles winner, ex- world number one and also a goodwill ambassador of the United Nations Development Program, Sharapova was left behind her rival Serena Williams according to Forbes 100. The younger Williams sister occupies 61st place with, however, the smaller annual income of $6.5 million.
Another popular tennis player, Serbian Ana Ivanovich, last year occupying the 90th line with annual earnings of $10 million, did not make it to the list this year.
Among male sporting figures, golfer Tiger Woods, who earned $105 million last year, is the first among the boys and fifth in the overall ratings.
First place went to Oprah Winfrey, second to pop singer Beyonce Knowles, third place to the director of the world’s two most-successful films “Avatar” and “Titanic”, James Cameron, and the fourth to eccentric pop-singer Lady Gaga.
The Forbes rating of the most powerful celebrities is based on the frequency of their names being mentioned in the mass media, and also on their financial success.
