The Republicans, Iran, and Obama: What we know, and what we can do

Published: 03 January, 2012, 19:29

If you have been watching the GOP presidential debates, you obviously have figured out that all but Ron Paul want to go and get Iran. They do not just want to go and get Iran, but as Newt Gingrich said, “go get em and then deny it”. Yikes!!! So what does this completely aggressive posture towards Iran mean? Does it mean that the GOP has conveniently forgotten about poorly judged Iraq war? Does...

Jake,
I agree with you on your analysis of the GOP race, but my only doubt is that Ron Paul may have the ability to muster a presidential campaign to legitimately challenge POTUS. I mean, the "experts" discounted Dr. Paul long ago, and now look at where he stands. His movement is gathering steam, and none of us can predict how his campaign will continue to grow.

On to Iran...I think the world will eventually accept a nuclear-armed Iran. Look to North Korea as the yardstick for this situation and a parallel situation. I theorize that the United States will not ever interfere militarily with powerful nations such as North Korea or Iran. The costs for such military adventures is too high, and definitely not a price the U.S. is willing or able to pay at this juncture. Iraq and Afghanistan were "acceptable" military ventures because we thought at the time that the price for invasion/occupation would be low. We rolled the dice and lost on those two bets. However, million-man armies and advanced technologies frighten politicians on Capitol Hill. A war against Iran would be akin to another Korean War (which is still ongoing).
The problem with my analysis is the lack of account for the "wild card." If Israel moves forward with an air strike before November (highly likely), then all hell could break loose in the Middle East. It would be a major geopolitical upheaval for the region and the world. The United States would lose both soft and hard power projection abilities. The U.S. is already in decline as the global hegemon, and short of nuclear war, we will continue to decline in power. China is on the rise, and I think given the opportunity, the Chinese would move to further secure their place as the future hegemon. :) That's another discussion for a later date!

Iran already has tactical nuclear weapons, although limited in quantity. There was enough weapons-usable materials to produce 40,000 nuclear weapons at facilities in the former Soviet Union which to this day are not fully accounted for. They were sold on the black market by guards and officers charged with maintaining security at the storage facilities. Most of the facilities lacked fences, monitors, alarms, and comprehensive accounting systems to keep track of materials. Still want to take on Iran, you, U.S. war-mongers? Go for it, and you may get the surprise of your lives. Am I crazy? Not at all, these figures come from a 2003 DOE report.

___US would not go against Iran alone but with Israel and NATO, like did in Libya, and WILL go sooner or later (no choice), as their actual Economy (industrial era being over) is basically Oil and War military industry, the market economy being a gigantic fraud, thanks to lobbeying speculation and hedge funds (registered in no tax countries).
