So if you saw Monday’s Happy Hour , you know that school lunches is a topic that I get quite worked up about. And while I was extremely worked up and passionate last night, I don’t feel as though I did a good enough job of representing my point of view. I have a lot of thoughts on this topic and would have loved to say more. Today I remembered that I have a blog where I can talk about whatever...

I am also a fan of potatoes and other vegetables and full course meals. I grew up partly in southeast Ok on a small farm, and ate 3 squares a day with no calorie counting and I exercised mucho!
Jenny, I did not realize you were from Ky.  3 generations of my family on my fathers side the Powells are from Knox Co around in that area.  My 3rd Ggfather Levi Powell settled there around 1820 or so.  Never been to Ky, but have lot of kinfolk around Knox, Co.  They were moonshiners and my Ggf Thomas J Powell moved to southeast Ok with his wife and my Gf John when he was real young around the early 1900's.  Anyhow, it is a small world indeed.

Hi Jennie,

While I agree with you that potatoes in themselves aren't evil in themselves, I still don't think that you can discount the impact a person's diet has on their health.  While physical activity is really important, the choices in nutrition is important.  While it is good to encourage kids to make the right choices, there is one problem overlooked here and that is the role that all of this marketing plays in manipulating kids to eat all of this bad food.  While you and I as adults can see through the manipulation, I don't think many kids can because their brains have been fully formed to fight back.  I think an approach that focuses on all of all of these issues is going to have a better chance of success than just

focusing on one issue.  I hope that I have given you some food for thought.

The problem is not potato per se, but how is served or cooked. What is wrong of mixing potatoes with broccoli? Why it has to be deep fried in oil? and then extra salted?

This is not a big government taking choice away from adults issue. It is the issue of making smart choices for children that would eat candy for lunch if it were available. This issue alone will cost one of my Democratic Senators my vote when he comes up for reelection. He chose to side with potatoe farmers over children. Thanks for making my choice clear Mr Udall.

Potatoes are good for you - they're a wonderfully healthy food.  Deep-fried anything is bad for you.  A meal high in both carbohydrates (potatoes) and fat (typical American fare) is bad for you.
