Obama Gets Real
Published: 09 December, 2011, 23:42
For most of his time as a national political figure, Barack Obama has been careful to cloak his core socialist leanings behind a veil of pro-capitalist rhetoric. This makes strategic sense, as Americans still largely identify as pro-capitalist. However, based on his recent speech in Osawatomie, Kansas, the President appears to have reassessed the political landscape in advance of the 2012...

quote
Joseph Schumpeter, one of the most celebrated social scientists of the twentieth century, envisioned the probable future of the American economy in 1949.The Shumperterianmodel of politico-economic dynamics, which indicates a probable transition from capitalism to socialism, rests on four central propositions:(1)Large corporate firms, bureaucratically managed and routinely innovative, displace the entrepreneurs and owner-managers of classic capitalism, thereby shrinking the size, attenuating the economic function, and diminishing the social and political standing of the business class.(2)As capitalism matures, society grows ever more "rational",which causes a loss of respect for and allegiance to such extra-rational institutions as private property rights and freedom of contract.(3) Capitalism nurtures a growing intellectual class that, ironically,is inherently hostile toward the system that makes possible its existance.(4)As the opposition of intellectuals, labor unionists and their allies mounts, the bourgeoisie loses faith in its traditional values and ideals; its defense of the free-market system grows steadily weaker as it accommodates itself to a political environment that gives ever greater priority to social security, equality, and governmental regulation and planning.Schumpeter emphasized that "we have traveled far indeed from the principles of laissez-faire capitalism."
blah blah blah. America is controlled by corporations and the media does a good job of keeping the electorate oblivious while it destroys the world.
Unfortunately, Americans were so gullible that we elected a person who knows nothing of our history or Constitution. If he was educated here, and that's a big 'IF', he was not paying attention. The experiment of Socialism has been proven to fail repeatedly (which is the very definition of insanity. To expect different results when repeating the same mistakes). Communism/dictatorship appears to be somewhat successful. Only on the surface. It works by tactics of fear. Human nature and free-will dictate that sooner or later, people will get fed up with the tyranny, then there is revolt. Note the recent uprisings in the Middle East as well as all down through history. An oppressed People is a hostile People. Note Syria: the Oppressed would rather die than continue under the rule of a dictator, yet they will willingly repeat the mistake, through supposed "democratic"elections, and elect another who is just as much a tyrant as the one they ousted. The same thing occurs in America. We never seem to learn anything. Every election year, a gullible America is given the 'choice' of two questionable candidates. No one should be forced to choose between the lesser of two evils. How do Americans know which IS the lesser? Ignorance is not bliss...it's simply ignorance.
It's a two-party dictatorship in America. At the end of the day there's no difference between the two parties. They're both already bought and paid for, as is every presidential candidate who earns the nomination of his party. 93 out of 100 senators recently voted for indefinite detention of American citizens? Orwell would be proud Americans are stupid enough to believe the War on Terror is really about protecting them.
Unfortunately, Average Joe & Jane care more about Dancing with the Stars or some sporting event than what their elected representatives are doing to them in Washington DC. Credit an incompetent public school system (dumb by design) and a complicit media with the dual aims of misdirection and dumbing down. If only the fervor and passion displayed by sports fans in the stadiums was equally on display holding politicians accountable, then America would once again be a great nation.

Interesting Peter, how you equate unbridled capitalism with freedom and liberty. You know that it results in the concentration of commerce in only a few suppliers resulting in massive oligopolies to realize economies of scale. The free-market does not exist and has never existed and without government regulation imposed on the robber barons of the gilded age, American voters would be in servile thrall to them today. Calling President Obama a socialist demonstrates either your limited lexical diversity or your inability to dispassionately evaluate the facts. Rhetoric aside, Obama is no socialist, he supports neo-classical economics and you are an Austrian. The current imbalance between labor and capital has resulted in one of the greatest divergences in income in the nation's history. This unfettered greed, practiced by the 1%, will result in the nation's collapse if allowed to continue. Simply righting the balance between labor and capital is not socialism, it is smart economics. When you can point to an actual working free-market were perfect competition exists, I'll start listening to your fantasies until then you are just so much hot air.
