Some illegal immigrants hoping for a path to citizenship are about to have their dreams crushed: a bipartisan bill is making its way through Congress and could soon ban immigrants who recently arrived in the US from ever receiving legal status.

The US has a constant problem with immigrants from Latin America - but it goes and destabilizes these countries time and again or topples democratic, left leaning governments who could deal with poverty inside their country, which leaves the people no other way than to migrate to escape from extreme poverty, crime and government repression.

If the US wants to solve its immigration problem, it has to make a positive contribution to the economic and democratic development of Latino countries. I.e. bring the work to them instead of them to us.

For those already here they are not likely to leave no matter the reform.
