The adoptive American parents of a 7-year-old Russian boy have officially been charged with causing his death.

Vanya Skorobogatov died last August from multiple injuries, including severe trauma to the brain.

His parents, who could face the death penalty, pleaded not guilty to murder and neglect in Pennsylvania.

The Kremlin recently halted adoptions to the US after another case in which a Russian boy was sent back to Moscow alone on a trans-Atlantic flight.

It was the latest in a string of child abuse cases involving adoptive parents in the US.
