Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will be in the US next week, as the UN has confirmed he will speak at next week's nuclear conference in New York.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is questioning Ahmadinejad’s somewhat surprise decision to be there, given Iran's track record of violating its nuclear obligations.

It looks almost certain that both the Iranian President and Iran’s delegation will be granted American visas to participate in the conference that starts in the UN headquarters on Monday.

It is clear that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will try to convince the US and the international community that Iran’s nuclear programme is meant for peaceful purposes and domestic uranium enrichment means no threat to the international community.

The president of the Islamic Republic’s visit will coincide with the US-led push for a fourth round of sanctions against Iran. The US and its Western allies believe the Iranian nuclear program is instead secretly being used for building nuclear weapons – something Iran has consistently denied.

Iran was not invited to the Nuclear Security Summit that took place in Washington DC a few weeks ago where it would have had the opportunity to speak to the heads of 47 states that attended the conference.

Vanunu has answered the question about zionist nuclear weapons more than two decades ago. There is no proof the Iran has nuclear weapons or is working on them. If there was, Iran would already be isolated by everyone, includinf Russia and China. This demonization of Iran is the same fearmongering nonsense we heard in late 2002 early 2003 regarding Iraq.

mbach Firstly, for your information, I am NOT in either’s camp. Didn’t you comprehend my posts? I am not defending Iran, on the contrary, I am condemning the Iranians for pursuing nuclear weapons, and If they have them already they should get the same treatment as Israel, but at the same time I am concerned with the Israelis nuclear arsenal on the ground and in the submarines, because it doesn’t need stockpiles of nuclear warheads with the delivery vehicles of 11.500km as a deterrence from Iran and Syria. Israel is a danger to the whole World because they can hit any target in the World from the ground and from their nuclear armed submarines. They are armed to destroy our Planet. Aren’t you concern by this prospect? The United Nations gave Israel undisputed guarantees for its security and existence when they recognised it as a state, why so much nuclear stockpile? It’s a worrying prospect.

It's also interesting, Anton, that you are so willing to accept what El Baradei and the IAEA believe may be the case about Israel, but when it comes to their opinion on Iran, and the mounds of evidence that they have to support it, your camp labels them as liars. Rather hypocritical isn't it?
