One year to election, Americans still hoping for change

Worst Congress. Ever.

In the 34 years that an ongoing poll has asked Americans for their take on Congress, never in the three-decade span has that number dipped into the single digits. Never, at least, until now.

Obama's disapproval rating at all-time high

A third major poll in a matter of months has revealed that disapproval of US President Barack Obama is only increasing as more and more Americans are fed up with a job not-so-well-done by the commander-in-chief.

New book blasts Obama administration

What better time to kick President Obama than while he’s already down? That’s the route Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ron Suskind with his new expose on the inefficiency of the Oval Office. And it has the White House running scared.

The end of the year is a time to look back at the moments — especially the good — that came during the previous 12 months.

As the world reflects on what came out of 2011, a new poll from Gallup reveals that the general consensus out of America is that a few people really stood out this year in particular, glorified by the public for their great contributions to the globe. Who are the most admirable men and women of 2011? A sample of adults polled by Gallup say President Obama, Hillary Clinton and George W. Bush.

Never mind the White House endorsing three wars this year (one in Libya which Congress wouldn’t even concede to), executing American citizens, allowing for the US military to indefinitely detain its citizens or a crushing economic climate that has all but bankrupt the country! A survey of 1,019 adults carried out in mid-December by Gallup reveals that the Most Admired Man and Most Admired Woman of 2011 are Barack Obama and Secretary of State Clinton, respectively, each garnering 17 percent of the vote.

On the list of men, George W Bush is a distant second with 3 percent of the vote, followed by Bill Clinton, Reverend Billy Graham, Warren Buffet, Newt Gingrich and Donald Trump. On the list of women, Oprah Winfrey came in second with 7 percent, followed by first lady Michelle Obama, Sarah Palin, Condoleezza Rice and Laura Bush.

One can’t help but ask, what is more bizarre? That Americans overlooked the fallacies of the current administration and have neglected to recognize that this is the same President Obama who has seen his job approval rating hit an all-time low during 2011; or that Americans also still recognize and admire the administration that a term earlier ravaged a reign of terror on the world and have since gone three years without—literally — offering anything to the US people?

Is the country running out of super heroes? Or has America been lost in some sort of time warp that has rendered politics impossible to fathom and advance beyond 2001? Maybe, just maybe, the US is hungrier for a third George W Bush term more now than ever. Whatever it is, the results can’t help but cause the rest of the country to consider how, less than a year from Election Day, the next vote might be all too pointless.

Outside of the top tier of names on the lists this year are television personality Ellen DeGeneres, who managed to come off as more admirable than the queen of England and presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann. That leaves the congresswoman trailing behind a talk show host and a monarch with no legitimate power, as well as former Governor Sarah Palin, who has remained almost entirely out of the spotlight during 2011. Americans also, apparently, admire television star Donald Trump more than Pope Benedict XVI, who both edged out Thomas Monson, the 84-year-old president of The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

To recap, two American presidents waged by many as war criminals top off the list of most respected men, which also include at least three billionaires (Donald Trump, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and investor Warren Buffett) and a former president and current contender who have each been caught in adulterous affairs (Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich, respectively). Among the women are two females from the George W Bush administration that ended almost three years ago (Laura Bush and Condoleezza Rice) and two right-wing politicians abhorred for their bigoted views and repeatedly mocked by both sides of the aisle (Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann).

Chavez discusses America's hottest export: cancer

America has troops on the ready outside North Korea, has spy drones stationed to enter Iran and has God knows how many other secrets up its sleeves. What else could the US be up to? If you ask Hugo Chavez, it’s cancer.

Hey RT, your a new school gov. controlled mouthpiece thats pretends to bring news in the mask of clarity. I get a laugh every time I come here. I don't trust one word written here as fact, only entertainment. Thank you!

To say that most Americans are morons, despite the words in which you choose to say it, only shows that, much like many of the Americans you criticize, you are guilty of neglecting to research and investigate media and public opinions for yourself. Though there are many Americans who are uninformed and who have been poorly educated (or as some would say, who are brainwashed morons), MOST of us know better at this point. More and more people are waking up every single day. I don't know ANYONE who would agree with these results shown here. In fact, most Americans would probably be shocked to see them (I mean, Donald Trump? REALLY?), and that's coming from and actual American rather than an unreliable and clearly bias poll.
This was either an attempt to raise the credibility of some of these faces or the subjects of this poll were severely limited to the elderly and/or uninformed worshipers of television (and there really are less of them than you think).
I agree with TheMailMan; "this poll was for the 1%, by the 1%."
You want real American heroes? Try Dennis Kucinich, try Ron Paul even, or Alex Jones. How about all the people STILL on wall street and occupying cities everywhere, even though you couldn't tell from watching the news.

RT, I'm willing to bet a HUGE percentage of your readers are Americans who are frustrated with our own news sources refusing to report real news. Articles like this only frustrate us MORE! Please don't become "one of those"   too!

I agree with chicosmif - this report is too Opinionated. It is not clear in the website if this is opinion either . Most newspapers have an "opinion" section.
Now back to the America bashing.I lived all my life in America and agree:How can the US citizens vote for such jerks as most respected people of 2011?This leads to 2 conclusions:1.The polls really reflect the most "known" people. The presidents and cohorts are simply just the faces+names that are in the TV everyday and have the highest recognition points. Nothing more.Polls are very SUBJECTIVE and who knows how the questions were worded exactly?2. That the Americans , like most people are drooling idiots sitting in front of their TV's and being totally and perfectly CONDTIONED by the media. (tend to believe this after living there)
People LIKE someone first- then come the facts later. Depending on how much you like someone you will shuffle the facts and shift the scope and falsify statistics to support him REGARDLESS of if the world sees him as good or bad. LIKES do not depend on facts.Nobel Peace prize anyone?
