Americans prepare for disaster

Although world leaders are addressing the nuclear threat, some Americans feel that loose nukes coupled with the state of the economy make the world a scary place and they need to be ready to fend for themselves.
Nuclear issues have dominated the news in April. US President Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a new START treaty reducing the two countries' nuclear stockpiles by one third. In addition, this week President Obama is hosting nearly 50 world leaders in Washington D.C. for a nuclear security summit. While all the buzz seems to be about nuclear security, not everyone is convinced that the world is becoming a safer place.
Many preppers are worried about the recession as well as the direction President Obama is leading the country. They believe the president is taking away their liberties and giving too much control to the federal government.
"They're starving, they're losing their apartments, they're losing their homes, and it's just not right," said prepper David Strachan.
Strachan and his friend Joe Parish are preppers who have worked to deck out a mobile home with food, homemade medicine, maps and anything else you could think of to survive for days or weeks at a time on their own.
In the past year, the United States has seen Joseph Stack, a Texan, fly an airplane into an IRS building after writing a suicide manifesto complaining about the US government. More recently, the FBI rounded up a group of militiamen in Michigan who were allegedly plotting against public officials and the American government. These incidents, plus the state of the economy and the country, have preppers believing that the possibility of major conflict in the near future is not too far fetched.
"It seems like the more you make the more the government takes away from us," said Strachan.
While there are no clear numbers on how big the prepper movement is, there is a chapter of the group in almost every U.S. state. They are organized with websites and blogs giving preppers across the country tips on how to survive if there is a major catastrophe.

World leaders hope for a nuclear-free futureThe history of nuclear weapons has been devastating and tragic. World leaders meeting in Washington, DC hope the future is one of peace. |
Tony: You said it right: Government has been left without fresh ideas and all they can say is "a Boo-oo-oo". The situation is however worse than it might seem at the first glance, for that "Boo-oo" technique in conducting policy is not only what the US Government (media) does, but it is widely used all around the Globe. For instance, here in Serbia we all feel "Boo-oo"ed for the variety of reasons. Do not even like to watch TV news anymore, for it is all about threats (here, there, everywhere). Cheers!
Collapse of USA is an illusion. This is just a show for the public. Of course there are foreclosures, of course there are people getting unemployed, but this is far from being collapse of USA. All this is just a hoax in order to DISARM Russia. Drastic cuts are being made not just in nuclear arsenal, but also in conventional as well. Huuuge cuts are being made in the number of tanks, Russian army is alienated from the Russian PEOPLE (the so called "professionalization" of the army). There is also talk on the drastic cuts in the number of submarines, drastic cuts in the number of personnel... Russia is being disarmed, and all these fake stories about "collapse" of USA are made merely in order to ease disarmament of Russia. Russia is not controlled by the Russians but by the NWO agents. Russians will lose their national state if they do not act.

I never heard of the word "Preppers." Most of the people I know do not worry about an attack. We do know that we are vulnerable to attack. We know that there are people with other ideologies that don't value this life and want to bring themselves to the next life with as many people that they can take with them. Any age or sex would be accepted into their plans I think most people in the country at least are aware that we are vulnerable. I have never seen nor heard online from a friend or relative whether from this area or the world that has taken the possibility of an attack or economic collapse to a point in which they have done anything at all to prepare for a disaster. Therefore "Preppers" must be just a small group of extremists. But we are all aware that anything could happen.
