“Change in missile defense plans a trump card up US sleeve”

One possible scenario is that Americans will now be pressing Russia to help them deal with Iran, thinks political analyst Viktoria Panova.
By abandoning its initial plans of building an anti-missile defense shield in Poland and the Czech Republic, Washington wanted to show “the positive way America thinks now.”
It was also done, Panova said, “to have some trumps up its sleeve.”
“America could say: Ok, we’ve done that, but we can reverse it or continue either with this scenario or a slightly modified one,” she said.
“America can push Russia either on Iran or another issue of concern, so it’s very similar to what it was during the last days of the Soviet Union when America was playing with the ABM system being developed.”
Then, using that “threat” as an instrument, the US managed to alter the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty that Russia was pushing for into a more favorable one for America.

No US shield – no Russian missiles in EuropeRussia’s Defence Ministry confirms Moscow will not place Iskander missiles in the Kaliningrad region near Poland. Previously, Russia intended to deploy them in response to US plans for its AMD shield in Eastern Europe. |

Putin’s power play keeps the West guessingVladimir Putin personifies that magical moment when Russia went from being a crippled, post-Soviet state, to a relatively healthy, modern nation. Many will never forgive him for that. Medvedev-Obama |
Werry smart coments from ms.Panova..I agree with her view. I like when she compare Nato (west) policy from the past with SSSR and today Russia... Nato(west) and Russia always been and always will be 2 complete diferent worlds!Russia from the past and today got a clear face unlike west...Im not suprise that Russia win this special war in last 20 years wich west wage...and become a leader of multipolar world! Im not expert but looking in the past, I wont trust them at all...Change of their policy was force by Russia...Russia today is far more stronger state than all SSSR and far more dangerios for Nato egsistence. With reset button and ABM they just realize that...A turning point was Georgia(Nato) war when Russia show it will go all the way...Bush was only playing danger leader from danger state, but the world know who is the most dangerous state in the world when is right... Russia policy on Iran shall remain the same..Usa(nato) case- do not have valid and honest reasons... Thanke you

Sometimes it is usefull to hear what those close to the Administration are saying. Even though Zbignew Brzezinski has not been "officially" on Obama team, it is clear that his thoughts, and now his son's, are listened to. This is why I was amused to find this statement on the change in missile defence plan. "It should affect it [Russian-U.S. relations] positively. It is a good initiative. Hopefully, the Kremlin should now ask itself if it would like the U.S. to imitate Russia's recent actions with Venezuela in US actions towards Georgia," Brzezinski said. How interesting. Any further armament of Venezuela will be reciprocated by US actions in Georgia. As if, US has not been arming Georgia dirctly and indirectly for ages now. It may well be that the Latin American opening to Russia and China is having US on edge more then they would like it to be seen. I do not think that Iran is the issue. US knows very well what Russia will or will not do. The whole Caspian "theater", as it is sometimes called here, will take a while to sort out. However, the Latin American problems are becoming accute, and at the worst possible time. The problem is that the world is not ready to stop doing business with people just because somebody does not like them. The problem is, when a country starts shooting. US may follow the same model in Latin America. No shooting at Venezuela, and the problem is solved. At any rate, Chinese curse seems to to be upon us: "May you live in interesting times".
