Globally activists are seeking a new approach to handling convicted pedophiles – chemical castration. Many say current laws are too weak and sexual predators often re-offend.
Others, including many convicted sexual predators, disagree. They feel castration is too harsh. Nevertheless at least nine US states consider chemical castration in pedophilia cases.
Derek Logue is a convicted sex offender and the author of “Once Fallen”. He explained that those on the sex offender registry already lose their civil rights and castration would further erode those liberties.
“While it reduces the sex drive, it does not completely eliminate sexual performance,” he said. “A person can still perform sexually and there is a physiological function that is not being taken into consideration.”
Just reducing the sex drive does not eliminate the desire or need to have sex, Logue argued. Castration would not solve the problem, just alter it.
He further contended that chemical castration eliminates the ability to procreate, which he said is a fundamental constitutional right.

Obama sends billions abroad, cuts billions at homeUS President Barack Obama is set to announce billions in aid funding for the Middle East. Meanwhile Americans are facing massive government cuts to social programs and continue to face price hikes, foreclosures and high unemployment. Arab world protests |
It seems the Russian media is no less biased than the American media. Lauren was stuck on the efficacy of castration, well its not any more effective than anything else the USA is doing. Recidivism among "sex offenders" in the USA is between 2-10%, depending on the study, and what Laura failed to mention is that other castration studies have similar rates of recidivism. She also failed to mention most of these studies were WW2 era studies performed by the Nazis, who were big into psychology at the time. The studies were also fatally flawed, yet even then the studies focused only on sex drive.
Now, what will happen if Russia follows the bad example of the US? Maybe they will end up with 9 year olds on Sergey's list too, like we do in Delaware and Texas. Or maybe Russia will send those convicted of sex crimes to live under bridges in Moscow.
Rehabilitation programs and accountability is a major solution, not vigilantism. Ironically, persecution reinforces belief. Labeling, shaming, and ostracizing an unpopular group simply confirms their belief they are doing no wrong. Don't follow Amerika's bad example, unless you miss the old Big Brother days of government.

It is important to note that those people who are classified as "pedophile" are just a small part of those who are found on the sex offender registry (in the US). As for the topic of castration for pedophiles, it should be rejected in all of its forms because it is a violation of human rights not to be harmed by any law, voluntary or not.
Those who are expertly diagnosed as suffering from pedophilia need treatment and supervision. Children need to be properly educated about what is improper touching and know that it is okay to report any abuse to other designated adults.

Correct, Mr. Madison, on all counts. The premise for the pushing of this agenda is based on a myth stated as truth, that sex offenders often
re-offend. The simplest of searches on this topic will reveal the opposite is true. This myth has been debunked so often, both by private and governmental studies, that I am amazed to find any media source still printing it.
In addition, the instruction of children about improper touching and who to tell must include the information of, "No matter who does it," since almost all sexual molestation of children is committed, not by strangers or registered offenders, but by never-arrested family members and other trusted individuals in the children's lives.
