Do not agree that the invasion of Iraq was the point of overreach. The exact point was bombing of Serbia and taking of Kosovo. That event marked the change in NATO long-standing charter authorizing out of area opeartions. The reaction to the event was monumental. Russia and China reacted by signing Shanghai 5 protocols, that later became SCO, including 6 states. That was the process that opened a new strategy for global security. Iraq became only the obvious, the visible fault line. But things have been going downhill since 1999. NATO attack without UN approval on a sovereign nation, a founding member of UN, in order to force the state to give up its territory to secessionist, etnically based movement. The act sent shivers down the collective global spine, as the last vestiges of global security were shattered to dust. There is a strong belief in the Kosovo curse. After Kosovo, the world was not same again.

Bianca, Absolutely correct. That was the point that power was the legal justification for anything. It was the 'if no one can stop us' then it is right. Then the west became even more and more intoxicated with power, war and quick wins. But the quick wins ended and the 'democratic' break went on as the money went and the bodies piled up. There was also a reaction in the east, as we knew it's us next, if balance is not restored. The positive side of all this, the world knows collectively that omnipotence of a single pole is not a recipe for a stable, tolerant peaceful world. Sometime you do have to burn your hand, to understand what fire is. Sometimes telling over and over again is not enough.
