While U.S. President Barack Obama defends his decision to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay, former vice president Dick Cheney has accused him of endangering the country.
Cheney is defending torture because he is afraid he will be Exhibit #1 if any show trials start. He strongly pushed the use of torture when he was Vice President and persuaded a lot of his lawyer friends to join him. Now the current administration is sounding like it will outlaw torture again, and recently the news said a couple of senior lawyers in the Bush administration may be disbarred in their home states because they had approved the use of torture. Cheney is preparing his future defense and is trying to sway public opinion back to a hard line. Meanwhile, his 'debate' with Obama is not helping the Republican cause at all in the polls. Cheney is a loose cannon, out of the control of the Republican National Committee, and lots of Republicans up for election next year are ducking their heads and saying, "Cheney - who is he?"
