American society and businesses are adapting very well in this new world – the question is whether the American state is ready for change, says American journalist, author and CNN programme host Fareed Zakaria.

At the same time, Fareed Zakaria believes that the US has suffered from not having had a real adversary in the last 10 or 15 years. After the Soviet Union collapsed, America was dominant and did not have to worry about anybody else – and no one does well if they have no competition, Zakaria says.

Russian-US relations are now in focus in Washington with a new body set up to improve cooperation between US Congress and Russia's lower house of parliament – the Duma.

Speaking to RT's Sophie Shevardnadze, Fareed Zakaria also touched upon challenges that Russia currently faces, saying they are mainly of two kinds – one being the significant problems with radical Islam in Russia’s south and the other connected with the migration of Chinese coming into the Russian Far East.

Of course they are, it is what they actually thrive on, indeed their whole society is multipolar by nature, trying to ensure competition and merit. However, an institutional monopoly grew up, and the institutional USA found themselves in a schzophrenic situation, at home it was trying to be multipolar and free, internationally it was trying to be a Mafia head. Institution USA was then facing two different and distinct personalities. The result was that the Mafia institution turned into controlling its people financially and also turned into trying to control the world as well. America was squeeszed out. Like all reforms, they can be easier with an external actor. Russia is such an actor. The multipolar world which Russia is creating will squeeze out the Mafia and return the world to normal commerce and business, something that Americans thrive on, so yes it's good for business, so its good for Americans. But they have do do their part taking back their rights and freedoms. We ain't doing most of the work again like in WW2.
