First US supplies to Afghanistan go through Russia

The first American cargo intended for NATO forces in Afghanistan has passed through Russian territory and is now heading through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

Russia has accepted to allow the transit of non-military American cargos through its territory to Afghanistan. According to a source in the Russian Foreign Ministry, the decision will be effective shortly.
Georgia has offered NATO the use of its territory as an alternative transit route to Afghanistan. The move follows the closure of the Manas airbase in Kyrgyzstan for military use by the U.S.
