A new Hollywood film that features the 2008 war in South Ossetia has sparked controversy as to whether it is an unbiased portrayal of historical events or another attempt at political propaganda.
"Their film, they say, is an attempt to show that all war is evil." What nonsense!!! Russian action in August 2008 wasn't a "war" at all. It was a short 5-day operation to save the Ossetian people from the armed thugs Saakashvili sent into Ossetia. If the producers wanted to do a film about the evils of war, they need not have looked further than Bush's slaughter of Afghans and Iraqis. The Americans have been killing, maiming , and terrorizing the Afghans and Iraqis since 2001. In contrast, the Russian incursion into Georgia lasted only five days. The Russians saved the Ossetian people and left. That's not war.
Welcome to the film world where England have been the baddies for years, or have been non-existent as co combatants in various fields of conflict. Various scenarios that come to mind are the English setting fire to a Church filled with Americans in the Patriot, only American troops in Burma, that the Americans captured the submarine with the Enigma code machine, the list is endless, the big problem with this propaganda , is that the average Americans believe it!! So pleased that the Russians are objecting to this blatant propaganda, the English government should have done this years ago, by banning such films from being shown. It is curious how opinions can be affected by a cut in revenue. Albert
Hollywood is a very powerful tool in the US propoganda machines inventory. Thanks to Holywood we have a generation of people who grew up thinking that the cowboys saved the 'civilised' white man from the savage and primitive 'Indians' (no reference was ever made that the indiginous American tribes were actually fighting for their existance after the 'civilised' white man stole thier land and murdered their men). Thanks to Holywood people now think that the American army - single handedly (with only a supporting role from the British, and especially without any help from the Russians) defeated the Nazis during WW2 and 'freed' the world. Thanks to Holywood it would also be easy to think that the Americans actually won the Vietnam war. Yes, Holywood is a powerful tool that, for a generation not interested in reading books, let alone learning about historical information, is the only reference to historical events they will ever see.
I think it is an anti Russian propaganda and Russia was made villain definitely. But what about Iraq and Afganistan? Though I don't support Taliban or Al-Qaida, but that war was made by USA -UK Alliance and many innocent people are dying. So, how many films been made against those missiles attack when so many innocent people are dying in Afganistan and in Pakistan sent by NATO and USA troops? If it was Russia there was no doubt that they would have made thousands of films against Russia. When Soviet troops were in Afganistan so many movies and TV series been made by Holywood what was anti Soviet propaganda. Actually, Holywood is always politically biased and they see the interest of their own Alliances what is really sad. This is why Holywood losing their market and Mumbai film industry is occupying that place. If they don't change their character they will loose more in future.
I do not believe that the film will get much of an audience here in US. The public has been exposed to other similar political specialty "action" movies, and none of them did well. Most of the viewing public that actually goes to movies to see such flicks will probably think that the name "Georgia" has been invented by Hollywood, and will think of it as fiction. The only audience they are going after is "Eastern Europe", where governments will dutifylly help the film become a blockbuster. But it remains to be seen if even in such carefully prepared markets, the film really resonates beyond the usual thirst for action film and Hollywood movie stars.
Dont panic, its hollywood ,tisnel town, glamour ,and garbage, just enjoy ,its the americans, they only 200 years old, still time for them to be educated.
I wonder if I should see it, only so that I can respond to people around me who will suddenly become "experts" on Russian villainy after seeing the movie. I may be the only viewer with a notebook, writing down "that is a lie", "that never happened", "the opposite occurred", "witnesses said otherwise", "Saakashvili later admitted something different", etc. Perhaps I'll wait for the DVD.
Bianca, I can think of two Americans who will rush to see the movie: grandpa senators Lugar and McCain. Most Americans don't even realize that Georgia is not the Southern state that gave birth to "Gone With the Wind".
@ KIHNU, you say the Americans have been killing the Afghans. Yet you have stated in previous post that you are an American citizen who was born in Estonia. Does that not make you just as much American as anyone else in America, except for the "Indians" of course. So when you generalize a population of people or country that which you are a part of or live in, as killing other people, wouldnt you be considered part of that same group you are generalizing?. I would love to hear your intelligent response that would make you able to argue otherwise.
First of all I do not think its an anti Russian propaganda movie. Its just a movie like any other hollywood movie aimed at the American public. The public that cant differentiate between fiction and reality has itself to blame. American movies are stereotypical. Goodies and baddies. No one knows or cares who the Georgians are, and therefore for the US audience will make very poor baddies.Russians on the other hand make great baddies. You can not compare hollywood movies to what in my opinion are better movies for the intellectuals coming out of Europe. How much money do you think movies like "come and see" or " 9 Rota" will make in the USA? Americans go for movies like Rambo, one guy kills the whole army and wins the war alone.History and reality is not important to them and its sad that many there believe everything they see. Like the other posters pointed out, hollywood will use as a villain, anyone who the basic American fears at that moment. English, Nazis, soviets, South Africans and Arabs had their time, guess it the Russians again. If the American wanted to know facts, he would have watched the documentary on south ossetian conflict, he wants a movie and that's what he gets. I see the movie going direct to DVD in Europe, not really a blockbuster material. We Europeans tend to like movies based on an real event to be more in keeping with the truth.
I, totally share Alex Stone view, even when living in France. Many peoples here are perhaps more objective than the average British or American citizen. Nevertheless, our leaders (right or left) are pro-US and the average Frenchman is an American way of life's puppets. Our machiavelic comedian Sarkonaparte 1er is so imbued of himself than no-one knows where he stand. One certitude: he was a Bush's fan and entirely devoted to the US neo-cons. We must not ignore his origins, his anti Russian and anti-social genes. I am also ashamed of the deceitful shows seen when western leaders or formers US secretary of state visit Russian leaders, or when the latest come to Paris. As an other comment noticed: imperialist decisions-makers consider Russia being only a huge market and a tremendous reserve of natural resources waiting for the western multi-national companies' arrival. Like Mister Stone, I live in Russia during my vacations and will not mind staying there. As far as that deceitful film is concerned; I shall not pay a cent to see it. Conclusion: In many others of my 300 comments published by RT, I often suggest for Russia to ignore that sick western society and make itself the best possible example and try with other decent nations to peacefully initiate a new World Order. First thing to do is simply, without any aggressiveness, just face the real facts and tell the simple truth... (The USA + EU and a few other capitalists' puppets = less than 15 % of Humanity). Let us care about the remaining 85 % and THINK POSITIVE ! Sorry Future Generations ! Your friend: Jean-Claude Meslin
Hollywood - hey I've been there. Let's all stop bashing Hollywood here, as the famous movies that Hollywood produced, Star Wars, Syriana, are actually quite good. Unfortunately we have idiots like Flanigan, who want to show that "all war is bad" especially when the pro-American government loses. Bawww! Can I give him a cookie to make him feel better? Maybe some tea? Problem is, if you got money, that's all it takes in the US to get ahead. America is a bribe-fest beyond all imagination, see Bailout. So we have great propaganda movies, like "Second in Command" where the other country's people's wishes are fucked, but that's ok, because Americans know what's best for everyone. And it's all lumped together as Hollywood. In essence, dirt-pigs like Flanigan are riding the coattails of Lucas and Clooney, giving completely the opposite message, desperately trying to sound important, like that kid in school who could never get the hot chick but always salivated over her. Russia won this Just War, and won it big time. There really is no way to criticize Russia's actions, aside from saying "All War is Bad". Perhaps Flanigan should have been living in Poland, in 1939. Remember all war is bad, right? So there is no one to come and save Flanigan from becoming a Nazi slave. And ya wonder why most people think Americans are ignorant after seeing Flanigan's bullshit. BTW, Bianca is right, nobody gives a shit about this movie in the US.
That should show to all those Russians who keep on wishful-thinking how sincere and honest are the US decisions-makers. All dirty tricks possible are used to demolish Russia. Hollywood movies' factory has always been used to diffuse American point of view and promote the capitalist-materialistic way of life. Nothing will change until Russia beg for joining the pax-America and give free entrance on her territory to the western multi-national to develop her resources and take over her economy, then consequently her way of living (The 2009 Reset-Button was the biggest joke of the year). This imperialist strategy has been successful, all over Europe and in many other places. Why should it be different with Russia ! Sorry Future Generations ! Your friend: Jean-Claude Meslin
You guys are so unbelievable, oh my god American propaganda. RT is the biggest BS website there is, everything is bs and lies. I only come here to see what you guys write, but i get gray hairs from reading some of this stuff. You guys are so ignorant.
Sean....It's ignorance and illiteracy. All BS coming from people who just love to hate America and everything it stands for. But here is the "Stupidity" and the just plain ignorance of it all..... You have people like Meslin and Kihnu who hate America (and still hold a green card) so much that they left their country to go to America. Whether they stayed of left after they got there doesn't make a difference. They left because they realize their country offered nothing for an honest and hard working day. I have never been to America but have several friends who live there and they are so glad they left Russia, Ukraine and Moldova. Love it when I see the word "propaganda" coming from people who defend Russia when Russia for many years (and still does) used it to keep the people of Russia and all the former Soviet Republics from believing anything other than their own BS. Then you have Kihnu who thinks that America is in decline because white Americans are becoming the minority....WOW!......doesn't he know that was the same stupid mentality many Russians died for when they fought and defeated Nazi Germany?
LOL Sean, explain yourself please. Are we ignorant about Georgia, about Russia, or about Hollywood? Not sure what you meant. Thanks!
Thank you Sean for your observation, however we here all have our own opinions, and when we post we express them. We may be ignorant but you don't even have the capacity of simply expressing yourself. So tell me, does the movie actually match the events of august 2008?
Sean: "RT is the biggest BS website there is, everything is bs and lies. I only come here to see what you guys write, but i get gray hairs from reading some of this stuff. You guys are so ignorant." Sean, it's OK to admit that you are addicted to RT. I bet you also curse your wife, but you really lover - don't you?
Very trashy film! and it comes as no surprise that the Russians are the bad guys now as the Serbs where in the 90's. If it was the author's intention to portray that there is no "god" or "bad" side in this motion picture but as he claims to show that war is bad. Then i must say that he failed big time to do so! but i strongly doubt that this was his intention whit this movie. I can think of a whole much better example to prove that war is bad and use as reference Serbia,Iraq,Afghanistan as unprovoked military aggressions on sovereign countries but then again i think that it would be much harder to find "sponsors" for such a movie. P.S My question is does this movie mention at all how this War started in the first place???

The most frightening part of this film is the gullibility of people who will see it abroad, and assume it's somewhere near the truth. It's not enough that US and UK media in particular presented many warped reports of this conflict when it actually took place, including the muzzling of Ossetian women and kids trying to tell the truth on prime time "news" channels in the US just for political reasons, and that it took a huge effort on the part of France, Germany, and other more pragmatic countries to steer the anti-russian propaganda boat somewhere nearer to reality, now the "Butcher of Tblisi" is trying to enrol the hollywood film industry in his maniacal emperialist assumptions, and rabid anti-russian intent. And worse, because the US was involved in arming him, and guiding him at the time, the US public will never know the genocidal rampage he went on, costing many human beings their lives. There's been plenty of films made in the past and present that subtly, or otherwise, wave the flag for one nation or another, but this is beyond any of those. As a British man living in Moscow, i continue to be thoroughly disgusted at the poor showing Russia gets, and the relentless pressure on her from abroad, from those who have their eye on Russia's resources, and most certainly intent on taking them for as close to free as possible. I won't be watching this poor excuse for a film, but more than that, i've reached a point where i won't buy anything made in any country who's pursuit of inhibiting Russia's progress is obvious. (Georgian Wine tastes like crap anyway.) I'm long past being ashamed of being British, now i'm annoyed, and will endeavour where possible to help Russia go forward, whatever the cabal of corporate henchmen and their proxies in the US and UK want, or think. I can't believe i've got angry over a poor film which is at best a cheap shot at Russia, but it's too much. I've hit the limit of tolerance, and amusement, at the crap. Enough is enough.
