I really believe that the whole Iran fuss is just another element of the US foreign policy put in place in Clinton era. It is ironic, and perhaps a poetic justice, but it will be Mrs. Clinton and her old guard in the State Department and the White House that will have to preside over its dismantling. Bush era only translated Clinton doctrine into a spelled-out, in-your-face diktat. With us, or against us! There are many elements to that policy. Foundation is the policy of total dominance. For as long as it remains in place, only tactical changes will occur, and mostly in order to retrench and reasses. From that perspective, a new strategy towards Iran may emerge as well. One can only guess on the extent of retrenchment. The mere fact that Israel as well as Hamas are supposed to answer questions to the UN Security Council for the war crimes charges is a stunning change. Even though the missile defence strategy was in the works for a while, and all allies informed accordingly, the bruises in US/Europe relationships are real. The battle for Opel, the humiliation of German commander in Afghanistan, the petty obstacles in the path of Nord Stream and South Stream, the belittleing of NABUCCO transit states, being unworthy of asking for guaranteed supplies of gas --- as if they are mere maid servants of the ultimate European consumers, all did not fly well, and generated resentment. The new narrative of US involvement with Europe and Japan is to stay out of their way. It is expected that as allies they will protect US interests as they integrate into their respective regions. For Europe, that means greater linkage to Russia and Asia, and for Japan, with China and Russia. Japan has been left out of many integration processes, like ASEAN, and will seek to change that. The new strategy can be called "delegation". Will the key goals change as well, if the delegation does not work?
