Fewer Americans believe in the capitalist system – that’s the result of a new survey. Only slightly more than half of those who were asked, said the free-market economy is what the country needs.

This appears to be a real sign that the nation’s belief in capitalism has been severely shaken by the financial fallout.

Only 53% of American adults believe capitalism is better than socialism. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 20% disagree and say socialism is better, and 27% are not sure which is better.

Adults under 30 are essentially evenly divided: 37% prefer capitalism, 33% socialism, and 30% are undecided. Adults thirty-plus are quite a bit more supportive of the free-enterprise approach with 49% for capitalism and 26% for socialism. Adults over 40 strongly favor capitalism, and just 13% of those older Americans believe socialism is better.

Investors by a 5-to-1 margin choose capitalism. As for those who do not invest, 40% say capitalism is better while 25% prefer socialism.

Rasmussen Reports poll facts

National Survey of 1,000 Adults
Conducted April 6-7, 2009
Margin of Sampling Error, +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence

There is a partisan gap as well. Republicans – by an 11-to-1 margin – favor capitalism. Democrats are much more closely divided: Just 39% say capitalism is better, while 30% prefer socialism. As for those not affiliated with either major political party, 48% say capitalism is best, and 21% opt for socialism.

It is interesting to compare the new results to an earlier survey in which 70% of Americans preferred a free-market economy, Rasmussen Reports writes. The fact that a “free-market economy” attracts substantially more support than “capitalism," may suggest some skepticism about whether capitalism in the United States today relies on free markets.

However, the survey did not define the terms ‘capitalism’ and ‘socialism.' But the fact that so many people didn’t answer in favor of capitalism clearly shows that the support for the US economic model is diminishing.

Socialism is understood by most in the country as the increase of government intervention or the redistribution of wealth. Some Republicans in the US have referred to President Barack Obama’s stimulus plan as a down payment on a new American socialist experiment.

Why do we have an economic system that allows a pilot to be paid less than a manager at Taco Bell? - Michael Moor We need to re-regulate the banking and airline industry. No politician should be allowed to hold any office (Cumulative of all offices) for a period of not more than 5 years. Ultimately, I am an American living and working in Russia. Enough said. The USA is going to collapse, just like the USSR. No superpower has lasted forever. The USA's days are numbered.

I don't believe that the American Dream is over...in fact, it couldn't be farther from the truth. The protests being covered are from the left wing media who want the government to take care of them instead of getting off their lazy butts and working for a better life. Americans have forgotten what JFK said, when he said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." Contrary to your article, demonstrations are to take place on April 15th, to tell our government to stop the unneccessary spending that Barack Obama and his democrats in congress and the senate are doing. We, as a nation, want Americans to succeed, by hard work, entreprenuership, etc. We are tired of dolling out the dollars to those that are too lazy to go out and make a good living for themeselves. We are tired of supporting illegal immigrants with our hard earned tax dollars. NO, the American dream is not over. Far from it. The problem is that the left wing media reports on what they want to report on, not on the TRUTH! Obama took his first stimulus package, over 1000 pages of this bill and gave those in congress very little time to read it. That stimulus money went back to those who supported him for his election, the union workers, and the people who voted for him not on his merits, but his charisma. Americans are waking up and taking to the streets to try to stop this ridiculous spending spree he has gone on. Only the lazy, the hard left, and the radicals are the ones getting the coverage in our biased media. For the most part, Americans want to achieve great financial success through hard work, not government handouts. The national bank, ( the bank set up explicitly for the house and senate) had to close for a brief period of time due to bad check writing by our own government. How can they expect Americans to support their agenda in wanting to take over privately owned businesses, when they cannot even balance thier own checkbook. It's a disgrace and the American Revolution is on it's way! We believe in capitalism as a whole, that's what has made this country great. We don't need politicians who cannot even take care of their own personal finances to do it for us. As an example, our own treasury secretary, Tim Geithner, hadn't even paid his own taxes. The Obama administration is a disgrace to America. His recent overseas trip was nothing but apologizing for America. We have nothing to apologize for. It was also a disgrace that he bowed to the Saudi King. America bows to no one! We are proud, and we are strong, and we plan to take America back to the great country it once was.
