US Army Reserve Staff Sgt. Sandra Lee, who was raped twice while serving in Iraq, shared her story in an interview with RT.
Sarah, Why are you comparing this horrific case with the Red Army military service when there are at least one hundred more samples you could have chosen to? And more so, your comparison carries a concealed condemnation of the Red Army when you say that there is no evidence women of the Red Army suffered widespread rape in the hands of their male comrades. What you are effectively saying is that women in the Red Army suffered rape in the hands of their male comrades, but to prove how widespread it was authorities should search for evidence which could prove it was widespread. In your comment you have effectively painted darker picture of the red Army as an institution but on the other side you are condemning individual soldiers and not the US army as a whole. What is more, in your comment you say that soldiers who committed this kind of horrific act are an arm of imperialism and not an army of liberators, which in effect you are saying that had not been for these rapist soldiers in the US army in Iraq whey would have been considered as liberators. Aren’t you forgetting something Sarah that Iraq war is illegal one and weather US soldiers rapists or not they are there as imperialists and occupiers.
Give us a break, just like everything else out of the USSR, any blunders or unsavory statistics were censored. How you tie imperialism to rape is an amazing leap, but simply retarded. How anyone can think that a group of men and women who are trained to kill people for a living can all together maintain the highest morality while in the worst conditions is simply ridiculous. The Military is sent over there to KILL the enemy. Do you not think that a person subjected to that sort of stimulus could eventually loose it all together? I'm not condoning rape, but there is a reason that women were denied from the military for all those years. Want to prevent rape of female soldiers? Legalize prostitution.
Aristotle Jones, The honesty with your comment is doubtful because you are targeting and accusing USSR and its army of felony when in fact reacting to footage of a female US soldier revealing to the public that she was raped twice by her fellow soldier while on combat duty in Iraq. Neither the Red Army nor USSR was mentioned in this footage to provoke your reaction as such, so what is the reason for you to point the finger at USSR when in actual fact the US army’s reputation is in stake. Nowhere in your comment are US or US army mentioned. If there was a footage about USSR’s army your comment would have been logical, but as such your comment is neither logical nor makes any sense.
why are they trying to cover it up or not speak of it she is over there to help us. and no one care what happen to her thats is very un militay I think some thing should be done about and she need to give mor information about the person who did that to her
This situation does not have anything to do with what country the military represents. It is a problem that is caused by the brainwashing techniques used in boot camp and the whole paradigm of patriarchy. I have no doubt this is common to all militaries no matter what country they belong to. Any woman could be a victim, not just female personnel. The problem stems from the violence inherent in the patriarchal system. It is pervasive in patriarchal societies, and it intensifies in the military because the military is about violence in an of itself.
Women serving in the American military generally perform their duties in a superb manner and are a credit to their service. This article sounds like a break down of the chain of command in the units involved. Perhaps a look should be taken at the command top leadership to see if they were performing in a fit manner. When leadership breaks down things fall apart. These commands should have given total support to the victims and court martialed the rapists, regardless of where they were at the time or the conditions/situations involved. Being in a war zone does not give soldiers an excuse to rape other soldiers. Good leaders enforce the Uniform Code Of Military Justice to prevent such occurences as this.
Men need sex. Be them russian.., american.., black american or Iraqi..., men need sex. Men love sex. A woman goes to Iraq. Hot weather. She is enclosed in the same environment with dozens of male coleagues day after day after day..., Men do not have sex. What is expected to happen ? Men will try to have sex with the women. As simple as that. Do not blame american..., russian...or red army..., ( By the way : Red army raped many german women after the victory in 1945). Men are men, period.
This shows the need to segregate male and female living quarters. There were fewer incidents of sexual violence against female soldiers when this was the case years ago.
There is no excuse for rape. Period. Doesn't matter if it is hot, cold, wartime or peace.
If rape is what the GIs do with thier own kinds, Imagine what is happening to the poor Iraqis. Enforced group sexual humiliations.
To ppaul2005, First off I am a male and have served in the Army for Over 20 years and have been deployed several times. I have never treated any soldier, weather Male or Female with disrespect. Everyone is a soldier and has a job to do. I never had sex with any of the troops, weather willingly or against their will. Anyone who can not control his or her sexual needs is just sick. So your theory is just hogwash. I have had plenty of young soldiers working for me both Male and Female, and I feel that the Female soldiers are able to hold there own and should be working next to there team members. There should not be any segregation. If an item like this story is going on, it falls on the leadership. If a leader is not approachable enough for their team members to come up and talk to, they need some help. I had an open door policy and everyone used it. Everyone working of me and some working of other leaders came in and talked. Items discussed were address up the chain of command, and we never had any issues like this. My best wishes go out to Staff Sgt. Sandra Lee, This should have never happened. God Bless you.
America is a republic blessed with a heritage of citizen-soldiers. In the Reserve Components each of those service members (SMs) are "twice the citizen!" In this generation, female SMs face far greater adversity, and a much greater degree of responsibility, than their predecessors. They have, reflected great credit upon themselves, their respective Services, and the United States. Rape is a particularly odious crime that repels our society. Every SM deserves protection from anyone who would assault them. Our Uniform Code of Military Justice (USMJ) provides strong penalties for rape, and a seminal portion of any commander's responsibility is force protection, and provide all of her/his subordinates with a secure environment. Staff Sergeant (SSG) Lee should be an intended beneficiary of that protection. However, as a victim, a minority, and a leader, SSG Lee is more than the sum total of her roles. She has a particular duty to support her commander, protect other service members, and has sworn to protect and defend the Constitution, which by extension includes the UCMJ enacted by Congress. The article published "supra" quotes Sergeant Lee as saying, "The military sweeps these problems underneath the carpet. Yet, by neglecting to report the crime and identify the perpetrator SSG Lee clearly places others, at risk to the same, or greater, harm which she incurred. Now, some five years later she attributes her chain of command with sweeping such problems under the carpet. How can a commander deal with the threat to the members of their command unless those leaders such as Sergeant Lee perform their duty and report such crimes to their chains of command? Only in the unlikely event, the criminal turns-in themselves. There is NO excuse for any service member to sexually violate, another. Staff Sergeant Lee deserves commendation for her service, yet she should also carry-out her duty to protect both herself and others with greater resolve. FARRIS CPT, IN USAR, (R)
At first I believed what this woman was stating, but as the story went on, the more I had my doubts. First, view the video, when someone speaks the truth they face the camera, not looking away. Her body language is all wrong, one of the signs of someone lying is when they can not face the person that they are lying to. Not enough, how about that she is a Staff Sgt., that gives her a position of rank, and knowing this, she never reports it, does not scream, and let's it happen again, and still does not report it. ONLY when she is applying for benefits (money)that will be paid to her every month for the rest of her life does she report it. To top this off, she was in the reserves and wanted to transfer to IRR, at the end of her enlistment, she can go into the IRR with no problems. But instead, during her enlistment, she decided that she would go AWOL instead, doing what she wanted, not what she signed up for. It's a two way street. You sign, you serve. End of enlistment you get out or stay in what ever program. Bottom line, I don't believe her story... sounds like someone who has changed their mind about being in the military and will do anything, say anything to get out... How does she expect anyone in her command or the Army believe her after reporting it 5 years later? Something smells fishy here. And btw, I am a retired Vet. with 21 years in service.
Johnathan, Waiting five years before coming out is not an indication of a crime not occurring, It's not entirely uncommon for people to be quiet for decades before finally working up the courage to speak out about what happened, if ever. The fact that an estimated 75% of rape crimes goes unreported testifies to this, or are they lying too, should they speak out? That she did not look directly at the camera is also a sign of embarassment that such a thing occurred. Congratulations on being in the military, would you like a cookie? Or do you feel that somehow validates your opinion further? People should always report what happened but it isn't always so easy, and I see no reason not to believe that the system hasn't yet adjusted to such realities.
may Allah save our all sisters.
i believe that lots of women get raped by u.s/nato troops, but i dont believe this specific story. if i was raped by a u.s soldier, and screwed by the system, i would go to the media and leak out everything dodgy about the u.s military, whether it's murdering innocent people or doing false flag attacks. sandra lee is leaking out this story as a limited hang out, like wikileaks. sandra lee's role is similar to Aristotle Jones, and sarah. they are saying something that makes sense, followed with other kinds of disinformation. ie, rape is bad, and the red army did or didnt rape people. so, she accuses the u.s military of allowing rape, but at the same time, she is not coming down very hard on them. she is saying she was raped by a soldier, but at the same time still makes excuses for the military and talks about the u.s military like it is some kind of savior. like i said before, if this system screwed me over like that, i wouldnt be making excuses for them, and talking about them like some kind of legitimate institution. i'm guessing that the next time the u.,s military does a leak like this, they will probably take my advice and get a woman that will not only talk about rape in the u.s military, but also unexcusable, widespread murder. if you want to stop rape in the u.s/nato military, build some bath houses, encourage gay anal sex, not legalise prostitution

This is truly shocking statistics. First, women had been fully integrated in the Red Army decades before women were allowed in the U.S. military. Second, there is no evidence that women of the Red Army suffered widespread rape in the hands of their male comrades. Instead, of being a problem of men and women serving together in the military, this shocking statistics suggests the utter breakdown of the basic moral values of the U.S military. In my view, by raping their female comrade, the U.S male soldiers who did this show that they where/are in Iraq as an arm of the imperialism and they are not an army of liberation. A man who can rape his comrade in battle deserves to be castrated.
