Despite tensions over the deployment of Patriot missiles, Russia and NATO are cooperating with increasing closeness, especially in military training.
Russia must be careful that these cooperative training programs with NATO are not a clever ploy to eventually suck Russia into Afghanistan. America and NATO officials are twisting themselves into pretzels trying to come up with ways to get Russian commitment of troops to "fight terrorists".

If Russian soldiers exercise with NATO troops is for PR reason, then, this is perfectly understandable. I think that a typical Russian soldier may be less paid than in the UK/US but he looks better fit, more agile and better disciplined than a U.S/UK/ NATO soldier. Just look at the distinct differences between NATO soldiers and the Russian soldiers’ marching styles in the Red Square just three weeks ago. I guess Russia is trying so hard to show its troops are just like NATO troops!
