Let's talk, but remember, we always remember who we are talking to. So we won't be speaking to friends, rather potential partners on some issues. Can I say it fairer than that. We have great air defence assets deployed and in development, we also fully understand all the technologies involved. So I a sure you, there can be a synergistic relationship on this issue. But also remember our technical undertsanding, also identifies Trojan tactics rapidly. NATO has proved that militarily it is a basket case. The Italian prime minister , now that the goings got tough, wants the troops to get going, home to Italy. The Afghan campaign is a disaster in military and political terms. British troops are dying to protect Karzai's right to stuff ballot boxes. Now NATO needs all the help and credibility it can get. Why should Russia provide it? Until now Russia has pursed a successful policy of engagement with individual members of the EU. Germany above all. Before deciding on the long term response to these overtures consult the governments of Germany ,France and Italy.

The only party that is going to suffer will be President Obama of the United States. He will further antagonise the right wing republican oppossition with his preference to make Russia an partner rather than a competitor. The face of the world is changing. The European Union is one irish referendum away from the start of long birth to a single nation. China's economic and miltiary rise is gathering pace. The United states will soon leave Europe to fend for itself in search of greater strategic positioning against china. The answer: Better relations with Russia. A partnership with russia will secure european safety and enable the united states to focus its military recources upon the far east. This is where the real war is coming. Everyone with a brain knows it. China v USA. What we are doing now is merely chosing the sides. Who is russia with? That is the answer that may well determine the winner.

World peace would be more stable with the configuration Russia, China, India, Brazil, as NATO is aiming in controlling, bullying, exploiting, manipulating the whole world and it has already replaced the UN. This configuration will make Russia the leader of another NATO like “alliance”, may be with moral values. Am I naive? On the other hand the configuration Russia-NATO will allow Europe to obtain an independent from the US domination military force. Russia will be one of the three authority centers. NATO is not really a defense alliance, but for the time being is an instrument of the axis of evil that is the USA. One of the consequences will be the weakening of the importance of Turkey and “Israel”. In NATO headquarters the British, the US and the Turkey’s flags are always side by side. Is this symbolic? At the same time this would be good for my country Greece that is constantly maltreated by this gang.

The only reason that NATO wants to join forces with Russia on missile defence, is that they are afraid of the S-300 and S-400 with "Patriot" projectiles having a 10% succes. Nothing else.

NATO, you running exercises in Georgia, which seems to be fueling terrorism in the region, so the nice words sound a little schizophrenic. And what does this mean… “If we allow Afghanistan once again to become a safe haven for terrorists, then terrorism could easily spread from Afghanistan though Central Asia to Russia. So, it’s also in Russia’s interest that we succeed in Afghanistan” So why aren’t you doing that already, I mean if you can’t do the job now, why would that change exactly? I would like to see the USA, Russia and China in a security pact; it just seems more logical in this new world. Personally I think NATO will just run interference and slow down world progress. I think it’s a waste of time, a much more interesting idea would be to build a bridge over the Bering Strait, a new trucking route between Russia, China and the USA. Work on ways now to make Russia and the USA work, and try to get this world spinning again, then we wont need war or NATO, better plan don’t you think?

Wow, what a change. New USA administration and new chief of NATO bring quite a different scenario. Dare we even fantasize that Russia will be part of NATO? The mind boggles. In case I get too optimistic, I just have to recall 12 months ago, when NATO generals were including Russia in the list of "rogue nations" and Putin was paired with Ahmadinejad in the list of "craziest leaders and most dangerous". The people who said that in interviews last year are still in NATO administration. They are probably feeling like they have whiplash - the about-face has been so quick. The leopard does not change its spots that quickly, no matter how sincerely Rasmussen says "we just want to be friends". What will the "friendly" NATO sound like if, in future, Russia says "no" to providing its share of cannon fodder for the Afghanistan war?

I just dislike when leaders, whose words are scrutinized, get so ahead of themselves. "US and Russia can join forces...". It is bombastic language, not reflecting the moment. Russia, Europe and US are at the lowest moment in their post Cold War history. There was not a single issue of concern to Russia, that was not ignored, rejected, scoffed upon, or derided. In fact, Condoleezza Rice once, in an unguarded moment, proudly stated how the economic blocade of Soviet Union was the largest one in the history of mankind. And what the polite society did not say, but was obvious, all forms of trade barriers remain until today in place against Russia. Name the issue, the West was the brick wall. The European allies lately did not look too thrilled to tow the line. They looked rather exausted. The financial crisis took a toll on all, and the patience for imperial high falutin' laptop bombardiers --- visibly grew thin. What Obama needs to say to the nation is that the party is over. He cannot do that, because Republicans will never allow it. Their motto is, when in deep hole, just dig deeper! But it is not going to work. Unless US stops wasting its energy on pointless confrontations with anyone or anything --- we are bleeding economically, and make others bleed. We need to scrap a few more projects, like wars, occupations, thousands of NGO's, thousands of large bases and small baselettes --- scrap them all. Then talk with the world leaders, and establish a SECURITY FRAMEWORK FOR ALL. Everybody on this earth wants to have a life, live it without fear, have a decent chance for earning a living, and enjoy it with family and friends. We need a new world order.

So Russia will give the green light to Israel and the US to attack Iran, is that how Russia honors her trade partners?. Oh yeah I forgot! Russia had in the past betrayed her friends, what else is new? very 'honorable' she got used to.

Bianca is right that the US needs to refocus on looking after its people and give up its empire ideas. Zak is right that there is still anti Russian ideas. I want to be positive, but there are a myriad of ways I could interpret the US Aegis deployment in a negative way, for now I would like to feel that we are moving forward. But if I was to deliberately give this all a negaitive bias. I could say that the deployment is a direct response to us demonstrating to the west the value of theatre based weapons , when South Ossetia was attacked, which forced them to back off. The west had no answer, so they backed off. This deployment helps plug the western theatre based weapons hole in the caucuses. So weakens Russia's position to fight a war there or elsewhere in Europe after being attacked. But as I said I want to be positive, so let's take it on face value for now, but remember we will analyse all the alternatives, its our job and duty to do so. Tactical Theatre based weapons is the future in europe, not strategic based ones. Now for a world shield, yes it can 'work' (small scale attack), based on local autonomous regions, where the big player takes responsibility for a region, we can even look at sharing an S 500 derivative. It will never work with one player in the Command and Control room, which was the original idea. Think of air traffic control, and it all becomes simplicity. Simple things work surprisingly!

@Paradox I have a similar anxiety, however I interpret it like this… Its not NATO saying, Russia sell your soul, it’s the USA saying, we can make this world work better with Russia and China, because we didn’t like where NATO was going, and we not happy either because these international bankers just sold us down the river with an insurmountable debt. If we wrong and Russia has sold out, well then, that’s the road we were on and my feeling is, kiss your kids goodbye, because we heading into the abyss. But… if this is Medvedev, Obama and Jintao saying, no, we have another vision for this world… well then we all stand a 60/40 chance of making it, because even with the best intensions now, the bankers behind NATO have made an almighty mess of our planet. The improving USA Russia relations, is being interpreted as a sigh of relief, but these politicians most definitely haven’t painted a vision of the way forward, its still just war posturing, and its now stalemate. It seems to me that we were about to replay a world war, and Obama and Medvedev have stopped that, however what is also horribly apparent is that there is no world visionary out there offering the world an alternative. Our politicians all seem to be inside this, “lets destroy earth” system and they reacting to it, and what’s desperately needed is a visionary, a highly intelligent true world leader, to stand up and say, this is what heaven looks like, and this is how you get there. And that’s where I think our little green planet is at… we have at least two politicians that deserve their salaries, the rest are useless central banker sycophants that will get us all killed, and the world doesn’t have a real leader, just a bunch of moronic bankers trying to replay WWII which is now a zero sum game. Obama and Medvedev have done the right thing… but the problem is still there! How exactly do you pronounce Fogh? My feeling is… Fogh Rasmussen and NATO, just fix the damn planet!

Divide and conquer is the name of the game. Divide Russia and China.
