Agreed, many other countries have nuclear weapons. Russia does not notify anyone when they test their nukes, why must North Korea notify anyone? These are gross double-standards. Especially since North Korea is not the one attacking other people's countries.

The differences between a country like Russia or France is that these countries have intelligent leaders who can rationalize their actions. Kim Jong II is only in power because his father said so. His first official policies resulted in a 3 year famine that killed over 2 million people. He actually abducts foreign filmmakers and actors because he wants to be the next Steven Spielberg. This is a man who wants to make and star in his own action movies. That is one huge difference bewteen North korea and the other countries with WMD's. Of course the US government is just as stupid. We give North korea half of their food and medical supplies in exchange for them to not build nukes and they agree to it knowing full well that they have no intention of honoring their end of the bargain. It's like the Molotove-Ribbentrop Pact...Hitler played Russia for suckers on that one and North korea does the same to the US, UN and anyone else who thinks they actually will stop making WMD's. The US is stuck here. If we stop humanitarian aid, then North Korea says that they will declare war (as well as several million innocent people dying of starvation). If we enforce the agreement then they will also declare war. Basically the US is stuck. The dangerous thing here is that North Korea's only negotiation tactic is "nuclear attack" if another country doesn't agree with it.

@lolo The last time Russia tested a nuke device was during the Stalin/Khrushchev era and I think they would cause a stink if Russia did test a nuke device. North Korea did not attack any other country and why the writer of this comment is not concerned about the tests of powerfull nations which are conducted frequently without warning. I am sorry to say that the writer forgot the names of India and Britain and other underground nuclear powers. There is a negative compaign going on against Pakistan nukes for a long time and the powerfull nations are tryinig to capture their assets by harassment, threats, interference and cospiracies. Why this double standard with Pakistan, Korea, Iran and other week countries of the world. Why no one talks about the nukes of USA, BRITAIN, FRANCE, RUSSIA, CHINA, ISRAEL AND INDIA. These powers are more dangerous and one of them has used it in the past. People of the world need to be concerned about these nations who have a long history of aggression, oppression and destruction. I cant see the problem. Yes North Korea has a nuke , but would it use it unless attacked ? No. If North Korea attempted a first strike with a NUke , it would have China, Russia and Japan looking at it even before the US did anything! Actually M.N. during the first attempt at reunification of Korea in 1950 North Korea did indeed attack another "country" You might have missed it...it was this event called the Korean War. Lasted for three years, several hundred thousand dead and injured..etc. But that is the past and has no relevancy to this particular situation. That is the problem here. North korea is threatening the United States. You see North korea is so broke that its citizens don't have enough food to eat. In fact the US and UN account for feeding roughly 5 million north koreans through its World Food Program. Now of course nothing is ever free in this world and the bargain that was struck was that in exchange for food and aid, North korea would halt it's Nuclear Program. As you can tell, they lied. Now Nuclear Power is a great way to provide energy solutions for a poor nation, but North korea has decided that instead of building Nuclear power Plants they would rather focus the research on Nuclear Weaponization instead. It's a good move for them, they have it figured out. With Nuclear Weapons they can simply threaten other nations into giving them what they lack. This plan is called extortion and they've been doing it for years now. Interestingly, the US wants to back out of 6 Party Talks and let it be a regional issue, but North korea won't let us. The best option here for the US is to allow the North to have nukes and at the same time pull out all support. When Millions of people start dieing because there's no food, they will either flood into China as they have been doing or die by the millions or simply take down the government.

Kim Jong Ill is clearly a psycho dictator, and should own such toys. its ok that USA, FRANCE, Russia have nukes b/c we are all tied together economically and this has brought a level of dependency, responsibility, and peace (sort of). N. Korea, could easlily sell a weapon so some group a religious radicals and detonate the damn think in your country. they have nothing to lose which is frightening.

Yes the DPKK invaded south Korea, however, htis was a direct result of America expelling communists from south korea and they in turn put pressure on the north korean leadership to start the war.The "UN security council" endorsed the retaliation, the security council lacking the soviet union and the peoples republic of china, that is. Somehow, America thought that a military dictatorship (chiang kai shek) controlling a small island were adaquete to represent a huge country like china. This american led "UN command" is still in place today, and is used to legitimise america's military annexation of the korean peninsula. Brett, why do you think north korea has nukes? would it have something to do with the fact that America threatened to use nukes on north korea in the fifties. Of course north korea took this seriously, the americans had just bombed 2million koreans to death north of the 38th parralell, and also had nuked hundreds of thousands of civilians the previous decade. they were propping up a dictator (Synghman Rhee) who wanted to "march north", they deployed b-52's with nuclear weapons on north korean territory, yet, you say there is no logical reason why they should want nukes???? your logic contradicts itself. How many nukes and troops does America have ready to strike North Korea???? This is not a case of crazy north korea bent on destruction, rather, north korea standing up to america, developing defence technology, to protect itself from the very real threat of american invasion. Sure America want's to keep troops on the korean peninusla even in the event of Korean reunification, and they expect Russia and china to support them. Until people like you, who have what I like to call a "generic" point of view on North Korea (i.e. like it was programmed into you by the western media, and no independent thought or research put into it) realise that America is, has always been, and always will be, part of the problem, and not part of the solution, then this stalemate will continue.

I now ask you: Who invaded Yugoslavia, Iraq, Afghanistan? Who illegally occupies Palestine? Who tortures foreigners in Guantanamo Bay? Your so-called intelligent leadership does all of this, not North Korea. Please stop watching American propaganda and seek alternative news channels.

With all the illegal US and NATO wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Yugoslavia ... it is no wonder that countries are getting nervous and are reacting to try to keep out US and NATO aggression. After all, I am sure they don't want their sons and daughters tortured, or their resources raped from their country. So I think step one, needs to be to deal with the aggressors first, then there becomes a case for these countries not requirning nuclear weapons, Until then, of course they will use all the means at their disposal to prevent a NATO or US invasion. Indeed it is them excercising self defence. Just like we in Russia use them to keep out the US and NATO. Additionally, even if we can control the US and NATO aggressors, to allow small states to live nuclear free. There is still the issue of equality. We would need ensure that all small states are nuclear free, including the likes of Israel. that would mean employing sanctions against them all in an evenhanded fashion. Without this, it would just be one tribe against another, as it is now. This will advance nothing.

Why is everyone so supportive of North Korea, Saddem's Iraq, and Iran? If you lived in these countries you have no rights, its so pathetic in 2009. Your families could be killed or imprisioned if you expressed a negative opinion about the government or ideology. Their way of thinking is a remnent of medieval times, they never evolved. US doesn't have a perfect history, but to be so supportive of Kim Jung Il, Saddam Hussein's Iraq, Ahmadinejad, I wish the whole modern world would just unite and slap these jerks off the planet.
