The scandals have already damaged the US war effort in Afghanistan so much that Obama is now reconsidering the strategy that he put in place only six months ago, says Ivan Eland from the Independent Institute.

“This Afghan election had earthshaking implications for the US war effort,” Eland said.

And recently there was another new scandal that may further undermine the UN's credibility in Afghanistan. A high-ranking US diplomat was fired after he wrote a letter accusing the head of the UN mission in Afghanistan of concealing election fraud to benefit the incumbent president, Hamid Karzai.

“Peter Galbraith is a man of high integrity and I would bet that his word is good,” Eland said, in reference to the US diplomat.
